BioPed in Haiti with Soles4Souls

Thank You for making this possible!

Thanks to your generous donations of over 26,000 pairs of gently used shoes to BioPed, we were able to give some hope to so many people in Haiti.   Your small gesture has a huge impact on people in need!  We are incredibly proud of the group of BioPed Team Members who traveled to villages in the Port au Prince area to fit new shoes on over a thousand school children, but our work doesn’t stop there…

Did you know that 1.2 billion people on this planet live on less than $1.25 per day, and that 400 million are children?  Most are not looking for a hand out, but rather a hand up, to help them out of poverty.  It was incredible to fit kids with new shoes and experience their smiles, but this is only temporary relief. The Haitian people need long term solutions.  The shoes that you have generously donated are put towards sustainable solutions, in the form of an micro-enterprise program that provides people with dignity and a way out of poverty.

The Soles4Souls micro-enterprise model provides Haitian entrepreneurs with the ability to start small businesses, through access to startup loans and by providing a steady supply of high-quality, low-cost product to be sold at local markets. This is a powerful and sustainable way for people to lift themselves, and their families, out of poverty.  We met Ginette, who is one of these micro-enterprise entrepreneurs.  Through the program, Ginette purchases the used shoes for a low cost and resells the shoes to people in the market. Over the years, Ginette has managed to provide for her family of 4, along with her extended family of 3 kids who she inherited when her sister passed away in the 2010 earthquake.  Ginette has managed to purchase a home and put her son through the University of Haiti’s engineering program.  She also employs a number of people, helping to lift them out of poverty as well.  Ginette’s pride stems from the fact that she didn’t get a hand out, but rather support to help her carve her own path.  She is a strong and incredibly proud Haitian woman who became emotional when talking about you, her Soles4Souls family and how you have given her a hand up, versus a hand out, and what that has done for her family.   She thanks you and sends her love!

In many developing nations, walking is the primary mode of transportation. Every day millions are exposed to unsanitary conditions that lead to diseases such as hookworm, threadworm and the dreaded Tunga Penetrans, or “jiggers”. These diseases may lead to sickness, even death. They also keep children out of school, leaving them without an education and continuing the cycle of poverty.

With your help, we can provide simple, free, life-changing solutions: good pairs of used shoes.

Every pair counts and you can drop off your used shoes to any BioPed location.

Your BioPed team will be returning to Haiti and would love you to join us!  Learn more about Soles4Souls travel by clicking the button below.

  • Your Feet Could Be To Blame for Ankle, Knee or Hip Pain!

You probably recall the childhood song – “the foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone’s connected to the leg bone…” While this may have been a broad simplification, there is great truth in this elementary school tune. The human body is like an integrated chain reaction. This means that when one body part is working optimally – others will often follow. When one joint or muscle moves, it creates a chain of reactions in the associated muscles and joints. Poor mobility, improper posture or inactivity due to injury or surgery can cause significant pain in the affected joint or muscle but it can also create discomfort in other distant body parts. ...

    Orthotics in the Workplace

For individuals in the workforce, increased time spent on their feet can be quite fatiguing.  Often employment positions in sales, service and factory work requires individuals to stand and/or walk for eight to twelve hours a day, three to six consecutive days a week.  Eventually the demands placed on the body leave the worker with sore and achy feet and legs, especially by the end of the day.  Unfortunately for those suffering from plantar fasciitis, they may also experience pain first thing in the morning. Rest is often part of the solution, but not always practical. ...

    Custom Orthotics

Next time you put on your favourite shoes, take a moment to check out the insoles. Often times, you’ll find there’s not a lot in there! Manufacturers typically use thin liners or generic foam insoles that do not provide any support to the arches of your feet. When you purchase insoles from a pharmacy or department store, chances are very high that they are not a perfect match for your feet. Although there are some products that claim to be “custom fit,” this is not the same as custom made. Continue reading to learn more about custom orthotics and how they can help you....
