| Shoe in for Expectant Mothers There’s nothing like first-hand experience to make a true believer out of Jenny Nichols – wife of Pedorthist and BioPed franchisee Kristian Olauson. This proud dad took care of wife Jenny’s feet during her pregnancy. Says 32 year old Jenny, “Almost immediately, I could feel the change in my hips and thought I might be developing sciatica. I turned to Kris for help, but wondered about all the women who accept pain as a normal part of pregnancy.”“My ankles swelled like an elephant,” laughs Jenny, “so I had several pairs of sandals modified to give me additional support. Kris continued making changes to my shoes as I moved through my pregnancy.” Besides making customized orthotics, Pedorthists also offer other services like shoe modifications. Orthotics can be helpful to expectant mothers, especially if they have a pre-existing foot condition like Jenny, who suffers from the symptoms associated with high arches. Most often, pregnant women can benefit from having their existing shoes adjusted.“The most important thing is for women to know they don’t have to suffer for nine months. There is help out there for swollen feet, knee pain or back pain,” says Jenny. “Many off-the-shelf shoes from a BioPed Centre can be modified to provide more comfort. It’s so worth it!” During pregnancy, ligaments in the hips and feet loosen, the hips broaden in preparation for the delivery and the arch of the foot often drops due to weight gain and ligament laxity. BioPed sandals with adjustable straps are an excellent option for swelling ankles and fallen arches and their moulded insoles give extra support to tired feet. While back straps around the ankle are seldom needed when wearing sandals around the house, they may be necessary when out walking on rougher terrain. Following pregnancy, the straps can be tightened as the foot returns to its normal shape. Congratulations Kristian and Jenny on the birth of baby Noah and the first anniversary of your BioPed Centre in Peterborough, Ontario. |
