patient experience
Our Canadian Certified Pedorthists are at the heart of the quality products and services delivered through our 60 Centres and clinics across Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Using on-site labs, BioPed Pedorthists are trained to employ a wide range of casting and fabrication techniques to manufacture soft, semi-rigid and rigid orthotics. The fabrication technique selected by the Pedorthist is based on the foot condition, patient lifestyle and a goal of achieving the best end result.

EVALUATION

We begin with a full biomechanical evaluation including a gait analysis, Closed Kinetic Chain testing and range of motion testing. The patient’s lifestyle, activities, relevant medical history, Physician recommendations and special needs are considered and carefully evaluated well before any treatment is recommended.

Throughout the evaluation, the Pedorthist takes the time to explain and educate each patient regarding their condition and treatment – an approach which increases compliance to recommendations and ultimately accelerates improvement.

CASTING AND MANUFACTURING

As no two patients, conditions or cirumstances are identical, all BioPed Pedorthists are trained in a variety of casting techniques and can select the fabrication method which will produce the best end result for each patient. This may include, for example, wax, plaster or 3-dimensional digital casting. With on-site labs in each of our Centres, the patient is assured that his / her orthotics will be produced precisely by a Canadian Certified Pedorthist. In some cases, footwear customization may also be necessary – a process which can be completed on-site as well.

DISPENSING

Once the orthotics have been manufactured, the patient is contacted by the BioPed Patient Coordinator or Pedorthist and an appointment is arranged. During this appointment, a thorough assessment of fit, comfort and correction is completed and sufficient time is put aside for any required adjustments. The Pedorthist will also recommend the best footwear appropriate for the patient’s condition and lifestyle. BioPed Centres have a wide selection of appealing, orthopaedic-quality footwear to choose from – any of which may be further customized if needed.

Each patient is provided helpful instructions regarding the best practice for acclimating and caring for orthotics.
