How To Clean Cork Footbed Sandals At Home – Cleaning Birkenstock Sandals

Cork footbeds have several benefits when it comes to orthopaedic support, but how do you clean them at home? Rather than buying a new pair, you can keep them clean with our home remedy! All you’ll need for this is baking soda, an old toothbrush, a washcloth and some water.

One thing to remember when it comes to cork footbeds such as Birkenstocks is that you cannot saturate these with water. This is critical because if you get these wet, they will be prone to drying out and cracking, which will ruin them and make them unusable. Check out the video below on how to clean these sandals!

Before doing anything, unbuckle the sandals if possible, as it allows for easier access to the cork footbed, which will make the cleaning process much easier!

To start, mix two tablespoons of water with one tablespoon of baking soda. The outcome should be a paste-like mixture! If your mixture is too watery, simply add more baking soda.

Next, gently scrub the paste onto the footbed using an old toothbrush. Scrub in a circular motion while ensuring to get all areas of the sandals. Remember, you want to avoid getting these saturated with water, so the paste-like mixture is a critical.

Once you have fully scrubbed the footbed on each sandal, you can rub off with the paste with a damp washcloth.

After removing the paste off the sandals, allow them to dry for a little bit before attempting to clean them any further. You can repeat the previous steps if you need to get out any extra deep stains or dirt.

Once you are satisfied with the cleaning job, put the sandals somewhere safe to dry. Do NOT put them in the sunlight, this will also increase the risk of damage to the cork footbed.
