When it comes to our health, many of us often neglect our feet. The Footlogix line of products offers a range of scientifically advanced solutions to help keep your feet and nails healthy, moisturised, and rejuvenated. Let’s learn the benefits of these foot care products, and how they can nurture the skin and nails of your feet.

What Makes Footlogix Unique?

Footlogix’s innovation lies in its revolutionary Dermal Infusion Technology (DIT). This technology allows penetration to the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in more effective hydration and healing. Footlogix formulations are actively absorbed quickly into the skin and provide long-lasting help for the skin.

Footlogix Very Dry Skin Formula

A non-greasy mousse that provides intensive care for those who need extra moisture and repair. This moisturiser is enriched with urea, a natural hydrating substance and skin softener, that helps the skin retain moisture without feeling greasy.

Benefits

Prevents dry, rough, and flaky skin.

Non-occlusive, allowing skin to breathe while healing.

Quick absorption means less waiting for the cream to dry.

Footlogix has a comprehensive product line for skin and nail health, offering a variety of targeted treatments designed to address specific foot care concerns. Let’s explore a few of their other products and how they can enhance skin and nail health!

Footlogix Cracked Heel Formula

Cracked heels are a common issue, especially during the colder weather months when the air inside and outside is drier. This formula contains ingredients, such as urea and allantoin, and is made to penetrate deeply into the skin. This can accelerate healing and provide immediate relief by smoothing and repairing the toughest cracks.

Benefits

Deeply moisturises the skin.

Provides long-lasting hydration to help prevent future cracking.

Softens hard calluses, making them less painful.

Footlogix Foot File

While moisturizers can do wonders for your skin, stubborn calluses may require extra help. Footlogix offers a foot file designed to effectively remove mild to moderate calluses or thickened skin. This file has a double-sided head with a coarse and fine side and can be used wet or dry, to maintain the health of skin between medical footcare appointments.

Footlogix Antifungal Solutions

Footlogix has a line of antifungal products designed to treat and prevent fungal infections in both the toenails and skin.

Footlogix Antifungal Toe Tincture Spray

This spray is specially formulated for people suffering with nail fungus. It is a solution-based formula containing Spiraleen®, for quick-drying penetration through the nail plate to the nail bed where the fungus resides. Spiraleen® is an anti-microbial concentrate derived from algae exclusive to Footlogix. It also contains avocado oil and panthenol to help restore toenail health.

Footlogix Rough Skin Formula

This formula is specially designed for people suffering from rough or scratchy skin on the feet, which could be a sign of a fungal infection. Rough Skin Formula targets the root cause of the issue by delivering urea to soften and Spiraleen® to combat fungus.

A Holistic Approach to Foot Health with Footlogix

Daily maintenance is key for achieving good foot health. From their signature moisturising formulas to targeted treatments for cracked heels and nail fungus, Footlogix’s DIT helps you get successful results for long-lasting foot health. Our feet carry us through life, it’s time to give them the care they deserve!

Give your local BioPed a call today to book an assessment with one of our Medical Footcare clinicians and learn what Footlogix formula is best for your needs.

The largest organ in the body is our skin. Made up of over 60% water, its main function is protection acting as a waterproof barrier that shields us from the elements in our environment, including chemicals and microorganisms. It regulates our body temperature and gives us the ability to feel things, such as hot and cold temperatures.

The skin consists of 3 layers:

Epidermis is the layer we see on the surface.

Dermis is the layer in the middle and is the connective tissue layer containing extracellular components, hair follicles, glands and collagen.

Hypodermis is the most inside layer containing adipose or fat tissue.

As a protective barrier, our skin is at risk for certain conditions and issues developing. To help maintain the health of the skin, maintaining moisture balance is key! Skin that is too dry or too moist is weaker and therefore its integrity is compromised. When this happens, it is more susceptible to cracks and injury. Colder weather temperatures have less humidity and therefore skin may become drier. As we endure winter weather in Canada, it is important to know how to keep your skin in tip top condition!

Dry skin is also known as xerosis (zr-ow-suhs) and can be rough, scaly, flaky, and often feels tight or itchy. Dry skin on our feet can be particularly problematic because of the large amount of weight, pressure, and stress they bear as we move about. The bottoms of the feet are prone to developing thickened skin due to pressure and friction, which can easily crack open if skin is dry. A crack in the skin breaches our protective barrier. Bacteria and other microorganisms can easily enter even the tiniest opening and may cause an infection that can threaten our overall health.

Dry skin left untreated may lead to problems

If your skin has painful cracks, open sores that just won’t heal, scratches caused by itchiness or discoloration, it is best to seek the advice of a foot care clinician. BioPed has medical footcare clinicians who will assess your feet and skin, determine possible causes and provide treatment solutions. There could also be an underlying health issue that is causing your dry skin and together with your primary care professional, they can help get you back on the right track!

How can you achieve healthier skin at home?

Wash your feet daily using a mild soap and be sure to dry well in between your toes.

Wash with warm water, not hot, as it can be too drying.

While the skin is still moist, apply a moisturizer that contains urea, an effective skin softener.

Using a humidifier in your home will add moisture to the air in the winter months.

Eating a balanced diet will provide important vitamins and minerals that help keep skin healthy.

Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help increase skin’s moisture level.

Cracked heels can quickly become a serious problem if they’re ignored. Let’s dive in to learn why our skin must be protected and nurtured to keep it intact and doing its job!

The Skin

The skin is the body’s largest organ. Its primary job is to act as a waterproof barrier to protect everything underneath. There are 2 main skin layers, an inner layer with nerves and blood vessels and a protective outer layer. The skin on the bottom of our feet is extra durable to endure friction and pressure from the ground when we walk.

When the moisture balance of the skin is maintained, the skin remains strong and resilient. On the other hand, skin that is too dry or too moist becomes weak, and this can lead to cracks, breaks and even infection. Microorganisms like to live where it’s warm, dark and moist, our shoes and socks are the perfect environment for bacteria and viruses to flourish. They are also found on the surfaces we walk on every day.

In the summertime, many of us choose to wear sandals to keep cool when the temperatures soar. A supportive and well-structured sandal will protect the heel from the significant pressure it endures when it strikes the ground during gait. It’s important to remember that dry skin plus unsupportive footwear or walking barefoot are a recipe for disaster for our heels!

What can happen if your heels become cracked?

Although not common, if bacteria enters through cracks or fissures in the heel, it can travel into the blood and spread to surrounding tissues. Cellulitis, an infection and inflammation of the skin, may result. If left untreated this infection may lead to amputation or sepsis. Sepsis is a life-threatening condition, and it must be managed immediately in a hospital setting.

Let’s get and keep your heels healthy!

BioPed’s medical footcare clinicians recommend using a foot file on a regular basis to keep the skin around the heels soft and to also reduce thickness. The Footlogix FR Exfoliating Foot File is an effective tool to use at home to prevent cracks from forming in the first place. After filing your heels, it is beneficial to use a moisturiser that absorbs quickly, such as Footlogix Very Dry Skin or Footlogix Cracked Heel. Applied to moist skin, twice a day in colder months and once daily in warmer months is an excellent routine to follow. If you have callus around your heel, it is best to visit a BioPed Footcare Nurse or Registered Chiropodist for care. They will remove thick callus or dry flaky skin, allowing for better penetration of moisturisers to prevent future cracks from occurring. Pedicures at reputable salons (salons who disinfect and sterilize their tools properly) feel lovely, but they should not be a replacement for medical care or advice. People with diabetes often have issues with healing or a compromised immune system and for this reason, it’s best to avoid pedicures all together.

Book a Consultation Today

If you’d like more information or are suffering with a crack in your heel yourself, give your local BioPed a call today to book an appointment. Rest assured, our medical footcare clinicians will provide a thorough assessment and make recommendations for treating your individual needs. See you soon!

With weddings, garden parties, and barbecues on the rise as summer ramps up, we have many events where we want to look and feel our best. One way we keep ourselves looking together is with a nice pedicure. However, when we want to make it last for a week of vacation and a weekend wedding we tend to choose the longer lasting pedicure solution: shellac.

Once in a while shellac can be a nice treat for your feet, however with overuse and application it can suffocate your natural nail bed, leading to brittle, thin, dry, and cracking toenails that cause more pain than pleasure with their appearance. Luckily, we’ve compiled some solutions to getting your nail health and moisture level back.

What to Watch for after Having Shellac Nails

Brittle or cracking nails – Under the layers of shellac, the nail bed has weakened and becomes dry, and brittle. It will remain this way until new, healthy nail grows and repopulates. If additional layers of shellac continue to be applied with each pedicure, the new healthy nail, becomes dry and brittle also.

Flaky and weak nails – Many opt for picking the remaining shellac off, instead of paying to have it removed via acetone soaking. This tearing away of the already compromised nail, removes healthy nails, leading to breaking and further damage. This makes the process of growing healthy nails again take longer.

Sore nail beds – This one is common anytime we finish a long period of shellac on the nails. When the outer barrier between the world and our natural nail bed is removed it can leave the natural nail exposed, damaged, and sore. The removal of the shellac is an intensive process even when done by a professional and it can leave the nail thinner, and tender, as a result.

How to Care for the Natural Nail

The key to reducing damage, brittleness, soreness, flaking, and the occurrence of nail fungus is to promote a healthy nail bed growth through moisture! Here we have some tips to get some moisture back in your nails.

Let them rest – Give the nail time to recover by letting them breathe. Avoid nail polish altogether unless it is doctor formulated, full of nutrients and free from chemicals, such as Dr. Remedy’s.

Moisturize your nails – Cuticle oil is a wonderful aid in getting moisture to return to your nail bed and helps promote increased nail growth and protection. Applying cuticle oil gives the nail a fighting chance at recovery. Additionally, at BioPed you will find our Healthy Nail Tincture, which has been proved to restore health to the the nail bed through clinical studies in Europe.

Drink more water – This is a catch-all solution for dry skin and nails. Drinking water helps hydrate the body, which in turn can help increase the firmness and hydration of the nail bed.

Let the nail breathe – Dr. Remedy’s nail polish allows more breathability between the air and the natural nail, thus decreasing the occurrence of fungal nail infections and suffocation of the nail bed, leading to healthier, happier nails that still have the summer event look.

As a protective barrier, our skin is at risk for developing an infection or condition. To help maintain the health of the skin, maintaining the moisture balance is key. Skin that is too dry or too moist becomes weak and its integrity may be compromised, making it more susceptible to cracks and injury. Colder temperatures air has less humidity and therefore skin will lose more moisture. As winter quickly approaches in Canada, it is important to know how to better care for your skin.

Dry skin is also known as xerosis and can be rough, scaly, flaky and often feels tight or itchy. Dry skin on our feet can be particularly problematic because of the large amount of pressure and stress they endure as we walk and run. The bottoms of the feet and heels are prone to developing thickened skin due to pressure, which can easily crack open if the skin is too dry. A crack in the skin is a breach of our protective barrier. Bacteria and other microorganisms can easily enter even the tiniest crack and may cause an infection that can threaten our overall health.

Dry skin left untreated may lead to problems

If your skin has painful cracks, open sores that just won’t heal, scratches caused by itchiness or discoloration, it is best to seek the advice of a footcare clinician. BioPed has footcare clinicians who will assess your feet and skin, determine possible causes and provide treatment solutions. There could also be an underlying health issue that is causing your dry skin and together with your primary care professional, they can help get you back on the right track.

Healthier skin at home

Wash your feet daily using a mild soap.

Wash with warm water, not hot water, which can be too drying!

While the skin is still moist, apply a moisturizer that contains urea, an active ingredient that will soften the top layers of the skin.

Using a humidifier in your home will add moisture to the air especially during the winter months.

Eating a balanced diet will provide important vitamins and minerals that help keep skin healthy.

Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help increase skin’s moisture level.

These tips work best when done consistently and on a daily basis. Give your local BioPed a call today to learn about effective skin care products to use at home as part of your daily routine. We are here and ready to help you be your healthiest self!

Your winter footcare survival guide.

When the weather gets dry, so can your feet. Embarrassed to take your socks off? Wishing your feet could hibernate all winter? You are not alone.

Dry, scaly or cracked feet are common complaints during the cold months. Sometimes it feels as though our heels are like velcro when removing our socks. Even worse is the “foot dandruff” we see on our black socks and slippers!

Take the following steps to better foot health this winter:

1. Moisturize daily.

Of the naturally occurring moisturizers in our skin, one called “Urea” is vital. It is no surprise then, that footcare clinicians recommend a moisturizer with urea to combat dry skin and eczema. It is colourless, odourless and non-toxic. The amount of urea (%) in a product is crucial. Too much is not a good thing and too little is a waste of money.

We recommend reliable products such as Footlogix, a Canadian Pediceutical line that is sold at BioPed. Footlogix has a Very Dry Skin formula with the perfect amount of urea in it. It is also a foam moisturizer, ensuring that it goes on where it’s needed and absorbs quickly to prevent waste. The best part? No greasy residue and it is safe for everyone to use; including diabetic patients.

Did you know that wearing shoes, boots or socks that are too large or too small, can lead to calluses and blisters? While the average callus and blister may just be a pain (literally!) for most, it can be deadly for some. In patients whose immune system is compromised, such as diabetics, the increased pressure from a callus, or skin breakage from a blister, can cause a non-healing wound. Non-healing wounds can lead to further complications, such as a blood infection or amputation. For a proper fit, ask your BioPed Pedorthist to assess your current footwear or make a professional recommendation for new winter footgear.

What is athlete’s foot?

Athlete’s foot is a skin disease caused by a fungus. It most commonly occurs between the toes. Everyone is susceptible because our shoes create a warm, dark, and moist environment which encourages fungal growth. Not all fungus conditions are athlete’s foot and other conditions, such as allergic reactions, bacterial infections, eczema, and psoriasis, may mimic athlete’s foot.

Causes

Sharing towels, shoes or socks with someone who has athlete’s foot or getting a pedicure with dirty equipment can transfer the infection. The warm and damp environment surrounding swimming pools, showers, and locker rooms are also a breeding ground for fungi. Historically, the infection was common among athletes who used recreation facilities frequently and so the term “athlete’s foot” became popular.

Symptoms

The signs of athlete’s foot can include the following:

Dry skin

Itching and burning

Scaly or peeling skin

Inflammation or redness

Blisters and cracking of the skin

Athlete’s foot may spread to the soles of the feet and to the toenails. It can be spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch the infection and then touch themselves elsewhere. It tends to spread within a family by walking barefoot in the home and not disinfecting the shower after possible contamination. The organisms causing athlete’s foot may also persist for long periods. Consequently, the infection may be spread by contaminated bed sheets or clothing to other parts of the body.

When to visit a BioPed Chiropodist

If an apparent fungus foot condition does not respond to proper foot hygiene and there is no improvement within two weeks, consult a BioPed Chiropodist for medical treatment.

Diagnosis and treatment

Your BioPed Chiropodist will determine if a fungus is truly the cause of the problem. If it is, a specific treatment plan, including the prescription of antifungal medication, applied topically or taken by mouth, will usually be suggested.

The soles of our feet have a special layer of skin that is not found much elsewhere on our body. This layer contributes the thickness of our soles and also makes the penetration of certain medications difficult. Hence, prescription antifungal drugs are frequently necessary. If the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotics that are effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria may be prescribed.

It is important to keep the feet dry by dusting foot powder in shoes and hose. The feet should be bathed frequently and all areas around the toes dried thoroughly. Also, wearing white cotton socks that can be bleached and changing them at least twice a day will be helpful during treatment.

Speak with your BioPed Footcare Lower Limb Clinician for more helpful tips.

Prevention

It is not easy to prevent athlete’s foot because it is usually contracted in change rooms, showers, and swimming pool locker rooms where bare feet come in contact with the fungus. However, you can do much to prevent infection by practicing good foot hygiene:

Wash feet daily with soap and water; dry carefully, especially between the toes

Avoid walking barefoot; use shower shoes

Reduce perspiration by using talcum powder

Wear light and airy shoes

Change shoes and hose regularly to decrease moisture

Wear cotton blend (not 100% cotton) socks to keep your feet dry by moisture wicking; change them frequently if you perspire heavily
