Psoriasis is a condition that causes dry red/white/silver patches on skin that usually feel itchy and irritated. These patches are referred to as plaques and are found most on the knees, elbows, and bottoms of the feet, but they can occur anywhere on the body.

Psoriatic plaques form due to a faster than normal turnover of skin cells. Under normal circumstances, new skin cells rise to the surface of the skin once a month. Then, the old skin cells die and slough off, allowing the new skin cells to emerge. In people who have psoriasis, the new skin cells move to the surface so rapidly that the dead cells are unable to shed in time, resulting in plaques.

Who’s at Risk for Developing Psoriasis?

Research suggests psoriasis is caused by genetics and environmental factors. It is also affected by the immune system, which means if your immune system is weakened, you may be more susceptible. For those living with psoriasis, there are certain triggers that may cause worsening of symptoms, including stress, illness and injury to the skin. Psoriasis is not contagious or spread from person to person.

How Does Psoriasis Affect Your Feet?

Psoriasis & Skin

Psoriatic plaques often develop on the soles of the feet which can make walking uncomfortable. If plaques are left untreated, the skin could crack and bleed, increasing risk for infection. Pain when walking may change how you walk, placing more pressure and weight on nearby joints as you attempt to avoid painful areas on the feet.

Psoriasis & Nails

Psoriasis can also affect your toenails by changing the way they look and feel. Toenails tend to be thin, weak, and more brittle, and may have indentations called “pitting.” They can also become discoloured, appearing yellow or brown.

Psoriasis & Joints

Psoriasis can also cause joint inflammation. This is referred to as psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Typically, the smaller foot joints in the feet are targeted, such as those in the toes. Inflammation of these joints causes toes to swell resulting in “sausage toes”, known as dactylitis. A prompt diagnosis is crucial as undiagnosed PsA can lead to joint destruction, weak bones and damage to organs in the body.

How to Approach Psoriasis & Treatment?

Several conditions and some medications can cause dry, itchy skin on the feet. It’s important to understand why you’re experiencing skin discomfort or irritation. If you are at risk for or suspect that you have psoriasis, please consult your Family Doctor or Nurse Practitioner to determine if psoriasis is the issue at hand.

Routine medical footcare appointments can help skin and nail issues associated with psoriasis. BioPed’s Medical Footcare clinicians are trained to assess and treat nail and skin issues on the feet.

If psoriatic arthritis is causing you to suffer with joint pain, call your local BioPed today to book an assessment with one of our Canadian Certified Pedorthists or Registered Chiropodists, to determine your best treatment options!

Joint pain can be a significant hurdle, affecting your ability to move freely and do the things you love. Understanding how to manage joint pain can help you stay active and do more in life, whether due to injury, chronic conditions, or aging. Joint pain can arise from various sources, including inflammation, cartilage wear and tear, or injuries. It commonly affects areas like hands, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles and feet. The pain can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, impacting daily activities. Joint pain is a prevalent issue, most people tend to live with the discomfort daily, however, there are ways to ease the pain.

Arthritis is a common term used to describe joint inflammation; joints are places in your body where two bones connect. Arthritis can occur in any joint, but the most common places are the hands, knees, hips, ankles and feet. Arthritis can be brought on by overuse of a joint, age or even genetics. Symptoms are swelling, aching and stiffness of affected joint. It is usually a slow process and can be difficult to diagnose. Signs are painful, red joints that can be warm to the touch. If you have a joint or joints that are difficult to move, feel weak or unstable, are sore with activity, you may be experiencing the onset of arthritis.

Practical Tips for Relieving Joint Pain

Stay Active with Low-Impact Exercises: One of the best ways to manage joint pain is to stay active. Low-impact exercises like swimming, cycling, or walking can help maintain joint flexibility and muscle strength, without putting too much strain on your joints. Even simple stretching and strengthening exercises can make a big difference.

Use Hot and Cold Therapy: Applying heat or cold to the affected area can help reduce pain and inflammation. Heat is recommended for arthritic joints and can relax muscles and improve circulation, while cold can numb the area and reduce swelling and inflammation. Do not apply the ice or heat directly to the skin, make sure to always have a barrier between the skin and ice/heat to protect the skin. Also, do not apply for more than 15-20 minutes at one time.

Maintain a Healthy Weight: Excess weight can put additional stress on your joints, especially in weight-bearing areas like the knees and hips. Maintaining a healthy weight can reduce this stress and potentially alleviate pain. A balanced diet and regular low-impact exercise can support weight management.

Practice Good Posture: Poor posture can contribute to joint pain, particularly in the back, neck and shoulders. Being mindful of your posture, whether sitting, standing or lifting, can reduce unnecessary stress on your joints. Simple adjustments, like using ergonomic furniture, or taking frequent breaks to stretch can have a big impact.

Consider Orthotics and Supportive Devices: Sometimes joint pain can be exacerbated by poor alignment or lack of support. Custom orthotics, braces, or other supportive devices can help by providing proper alignment and reducing pressure on the joints. A well-fitting shoe can also help to align the foot and ankle into the correct position, to help reduce the pressure on the ankles, knees and hips. A BioPed Clinician can assess your specific needs and recommend the right solution to help you move more comfortably.

Bracing can bring major relief to aching joints. Knee or ankle braces can provide the stability the joint needs, while also applying mild compression around the inflamed area. There are many different brace options, from over-the-counter to custom made 3-D scanned and made braces. If you are considering bracing to enhance your activity or even just to wear day to day, consider booking a consultation with a BioPed clinician today, they will be able to guide you and fit you for the perfect brace.

While joint pain can be challenging, there are many ways to manage it effectively. By incorporating these practical tips, and considering professional support, you can find relief and continue to live an active, fulfilling life. At BioPed, we’re here to help you on your journey to do more and feel better every step of the way. If you are experiencing joint pain and are looking for a solution, do not hesitate to reach out to a BioPed clinician. Together, we can develop a plan to help you move more comfortably and confidently.

It is quite common for arthritis to be present in the hips, knees, ankles or feet. It can arise with age, from normal wear and tear on the joint. However, it can also arise as the result of infection, poor genetics, a prior injury, surgery, or in association with a disease process, such as psoriasis. Obesity and lifestyle choices can also lead to arthritis, especially in the hips, legs and feet.

The word “Arthritis” translates to “inflammation of a joint.” It is a broad term that defines around 200 rheumatic diseases affecting the joints. Many people think that it is much more specific but in fact, any condition that causes pain, swelling, aching or stiffness in and around one or more joints, is a form of arthritis! It can affect anyone; all ages, genders and ethnicities. However, it is more common amongst women, ranking as the number one cause for disability in Canadian women.

Arthritis can occur suddenly or (more commonly) be a slow process whereby your joints become more painful and stiff with time. If you suddenly experience a reddened, painful joint that is warm to touch, you might have a type of arthritis known as Gout, or one due to infection. These types warrant an immediate call to your family doctor or urgent care clinic. Treatment will include medications, such as antibiotics or anti-inflammatories. If your joint pain is of the slower onset variant and has been persistent for more than 6 weeks, then you will need to have x-rays and bloodwork to determine what type of arthritis you have. You may even visit with a joint specialist, following the visit with your family doctor.

Pain in the legs or feet is not normal, even in children. Do not dismiss joint pain as “growing pains,” or “old age.” If you have joint pain in your knees, ankles or feet, you should have a BioPed Pedorthist or Chiropodist examine the way you walk and the range of motion of that joint, as well as the others surrounding it. Our lower limb clinician can make recommendations for footwear, bracing, or orthotics if necessary. These items can actually halt the progression of some arthritic conditions and prolong your mobility in life!
