Dealing with ingrown toenails can be very frustrating, painful, and can lead to more serious issues, especially if left untreated. Fortunately, there’s a gentle and non-invasive solution that’s helping people find relief without surgery: toenail bracing with the Onyfix® system.

This innovative approach uses a special resin applied to the nail surface, helping to guide it back into a healthier shape over time that reduces any painful curvature along borders. It’s safe and effective for nearly everyone, including children and people living with diabetes.

What Exactly Is an Ingrown Toenail?

An ingrown toenail happens when the edge or corner of your toenail starts to grow into the surrounding skin. This often causes pain, redness, and develops into swelling and sensitivity. If not treated early, the area can become infected – and in more severe cases, even affect the way you walk due to the discomfort.

Common Causes of Ingrown Toenails

A number of things can contribute to the development of ingrown toenails, including:

Tight or poorly fitting shoes

Genetics

Naturally curved toenails

Toe deformities (bunions, clawed toes)

Improper trimming (cutting nails too short or rounding the corners)

Trauma to the nail (stubbing your toe)

Fungal nail infections

Signs to Watch For

You might have an ingrown toenail if you notice:

Pain when wearing shoes (especially closed-toe styles)

Discomfort while walking, running, or putting pressure on the toe

Redness or swelling near the nail

Pus, bleeding, or tenderness at the nail edge

Thickened or callused skin around the nail

What is Toenail Bracing?

At BioPed Footcare Clinics, many of our Medical Footcare Clinicians—both Nurses and Chiropodists—are trained in the use of Onyfix®, a modern nail correction system designed to ease discomfort and encourage natural, healthy nail growth. Here’s how it works:

A flexible resin is applied across the top of the nail.

It’s cured with a safe LED light, securing it in place.

As the resin sets, it creates a slight lift on the edges of the nail—reducing pressure and pain.

The brace stays on as your nail grows, gently guiding it into a straighter shape over time.

Most patients feel relief almost instantly. In many cases, a single application is all that’s needed, though some may benefit from follow-up treatments.

Is Onyfix® Right for You?

If you’ve been dealing with ongoing toe pain or recurring ingrown nails, Onyfix® offers a conservative, effective option that doesn’t involve cutting or surgery. There’s little downtime from your routine activities, and it can be done quickly during a routine visit to one of our clinics offering Medical Footcare.

Whether you’re looking for long-term relief or just want to stop the pain from coming back, toenail bracing with Onyfix® might be the solution you’ve been waiting for. Contact your local BioPed clinic today to see if Onyfix® toenail bracing is right for you!

Toenail Bracing is an excellent solution for people suffering from ingrown toenails. Onyfix® is a nail correction system involving an application of a methylacrylate resin material on top of the affected nail. It is non-invasive and described by many as a quick and comfortable nail correction treatment. This method of nail correction has been proven safe and effective for people of all ages, with all nail types including children and people with diabetes.

What is an ingrown toenail?

An ingrown toenail occurs when one or both sides of the nail dig into the skin surrounding the nail, causing pain and discomfort. This can cause the surrounding skin to appear red, swollen and feel tender to the touch. If left untreated, ingrown toenails can result in significant pain which forces a person to change the way they walk or move to “protect” their affected toe, and they can also lead to infection.

Causes of ingrown toenails include:

Ill-fitting and unsupportive footwear

Genetics

Exaggerated curved toenail shape

Hammer toes, abutting or crossover toes and bunions

Ill-treatment of toenails, such as cutting nails too short

Fungal infection of the nail

Toenail injury

Signs and symptoms of ingrown toenails include:

Pain when wearing closed toe shoes

Pain when walking, running or jumping

Redness around the nail

Presence of pus or blood from the nail border

Increased thickness at the sides and ends of the nail

Callus build-up at the sides and ends of the nail

What is toenail bracing?

At BioPed Footcare, the vast majority of our Footcare Nurses and Registered Chiropodists are Onyfix® certified. They measure and apply the resin to fit each nail’s unique shape. The resin is then cured in place using a safe LED light. Curing the Onyfix® resin causes it to shrink slightly which gently pulls up on the sides of the nail where it digs into the skin offering almost immediate relief from discomfort due to nail pressure. The nail brace holds its form as the nail grows naturally, ensuring retention of the improved, less curved shape. Pain, pressure, and discomfort often dissipates instantly, and the correction effect is long-lasting.

As the nail completes its entire growth cycle, your BioPed Medical Footcare Clinician will easily and quickly remove the growing-out nail brace or it may pop off on its own. Sometimes two or more Onyfix® applications are required to achieve optimal results, but oftentimes one application is enough!

Is toenail bracing right for you?

Onyfix® is an innovative nail bracing treatment that will provide relief of symptoms while encouraging gradual correction of the nail plate shape. This cost effective and little down time required nail bracing system can be conveniently performed in most BioPed clinics that offer Medical Footcare (Chiropody or Nursing Services).

If you’ve been suffering from pain and discomfort because of an ingrown toenail and you are looking for long-term relief, a decrease in the risk of further injury to the surrounding skin and a more effective, conservative routine nail care, contact your local BioPed clinic today to see if Onyfix® toenail bracing is right for you!

An ingrown toenail can be painful! If left untreated, it can lead to significant pain which forces you to change the way you walk or move to protect their affected toe.

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edges or corner of the nail dig into the skin next to it causing pain, inflammation and sometimes infection. An ingrown toenail doesn’t always puncture the skin and can affect the big or small toes. When a toenail does pierce the skin at the side, there may be bleeding, oozing and subsequent infection.

Risk factors and causes of ingrown toenails:

Modifications to footwear are prudent for many reasons. In addition to removing pressure from painful areas and giving more appropriate support to those in need, traditional footwear sizes and fit may need to be adjusted for feet that are thicker, wider, or have bony prominences like bunions, bunionettes, or dorsum exostosis (a bump at the top of the foot). Footwear modifications may also be a solution for someone who needs additional support but is unable to financially afford custom-made orthotics.

Toenails come in all shapes and sizes. They can be flat or straight, or they can be curved. Curved or involuted nails, have a curvature on one or both sides of the nail plate. This curvature may be so severe that the sides of the nail come together resulting in pinching of the nail bed tissue, also known as a pincer nail.

Footwear that is unsupportive or doesn’t fit well, including shoes that are too tight, narrow or shallow may place excess pressure on the toes causing an ingrown.

Sweaty feet can be problematic because skin that is too moist becomes weakened and is easily punctured when a sharp nail digs into the side of the nail.

Toes that are bent or curly may cause more pressure to be placed on the sides of toenails. Hammer toes and bunions are commonly associated with ingrown toenails.

Cutting toenails the proper way is important for your health and comfort. When toenails are cut too short or ripped off, nails can easily dig into the surrounding skin.

A fungal infection can cause thickening of the nail and can also change the shape. This increases the risk for painful ingrown toenails.

Many of us have experienced an inadvertent toenail injury. Stubbing the toe or dropping a heavy object on a toe can both cause injury to the nail and nail bed. This can affect the way the nail continues to grow over time, affecting the shape and thickness.

Ingrown toenail prevention and treatment?

Regular routine footcare is crucial as it will ensure your toenails are being cut properly. During a routine footcare appointment, your BioPed clinician will use an antiseptic before cutting the offending nail. After cutting the nail, a small file is used to make sure the nail is smooth and is no longer digging into the skin at the sides.

Well-fitting footwear appropriate for your foot type, size and shape. BioPed lower limb clinicians will measure your feet in length and width and recommend the best shoe for you.

Toenail bracing using a composite band, trains the nail to grow straighter and less curved. It is non-invasive, and described by many as a painless treatment with zero downtime. This method of nail correction has been proven safe and effective for persons of all ages, with all nail types including children and people with diabetes. Pain, pressure and discomfort dissipates almost instantly and the correction effect is long-lasting.

Nail avulsions are minor surgical procedures performed in the clinic by a Registered Chiropodist. It is a long-term treatment option that involves removing part of or the entire nail plate and using a chemical to kill the cells from which the nail itself grows. This procedure will take some time to heal but can be an excellent option for chronically painful and infected ingrown toenails.

If you have been suffering from pain or recurrent infections due to an involuted or ingrown toenail, contact your local BioPed clinic today to book an assessment with one of our Registered Chiropodists or Footcare Nurses to start feeling relief once and for all!
