04 Aug Weak Ankles: Causes & Treatments – BioPed
Weak ankles are a problem that affects a large percentage of the population – but did you know how they happen and how to treat them? Although a very bothersome condition, weak ankles can be treated over a period of time which will help them strengthen and get you back to the active life you want to live.
Why do I have weak ankles? There are so many causes we know of that can result in your ankles being weaker than normal, a few specific causes are; previous trauma or injury to the ankle area, incorrect stretching before/after being active, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (otherwise known as PTTD), osteoarthritis, neuropathy (both diabetic and non-diabetic’s can experience this) as well as even just wearing incorrect footwear.
It is imperative to keep in mind when symptoms of weak ankles may occur as there are other symptoms you may experience such as; lack of balance, frequent ankle sprains or injuries and keep an eye on pain in both your ankles and feet.
There are lots of different treatment methods and know that you’re not alone in this battle! There are lots of different things you can do on your own as well as with a clinician that will help strengthen and improve your ankles. There are lots of different stretches you can do at home such as the alphabet stretch (while laying down, spell the alphabet in the air using your toes, repeat this daily) as well as some standing calf raises (with your feet hip-width apart, raise your heels up so that you’re standing on your toes, then lower your heels down – repeat 10 times and do this daily as well)
If you’re still not finding relief, finding and being fitted with the proper footwear for your specific biomechanics is extremely important and we at BioPed would love to help you with that! We can also help by making a custom made orthotic that will help with the issue or provide guidance on some over the counter devices that can help as well.
