Feeling stuck when it’s time to pick a gift? No sweat, we’ve got you covered with smart ideas you can pick up at a BioPed clinic. These thoughtful options are perfect for anyone who spends time on their feet, could use some extra comfort, or just deserves a little pampering.

Why These Gifts Work

Gift-giving doesn’t have to be stressful. When you shop at BioPed, you’re choosing items that combine usefulness, comfort, and a health promotion. Whether the recipient has aches, is active, works on their feet all day, or just loves self-care, these picks are meaningful and practical.

Top Foot Health Products for your Gift Ideas

Moisturizing skin and nail care — Think advanced formulas that fight dry skin, thickened toenails, or lost moisture on feet and nails. These feel luxurious yet practical. (For example: mousse-based formulas that absorb quickly rather than being slippery.)

Doctor-formulated nail polish — Stylish colours and nail health: look for Dr. Remedy polishes with tea tree oil, biotin and other natural ingredients so the recipient ends up with healthier nails and a great new shade.

Socks with purpose — Not your average socks:

Warm socks for cold feet

Compression socks for swelling or circulation concerns

Plantar fasciitis-specific socks for heel/arch pain

Comfort socks tailored for folks with diabetes
All come in various colours, patterns and sizes so you can match the person.

Massage balls — Small, affordable, and ideal as a stocking stuffer. Great for anyone on their feet a lot, dealing with arch- or heel-pain, or just needing self-care at home. Bonus: they’re portable and easy to use anywhere.

Indoor slippers/shoes — A useful upgrade for winter months: supportive indoor footwear in different widths, sizes, and closure styles. Especially good for those who prioritize comfort or spend time relaxing at home and want something better than standard slippers.

Quick Tips When You Go

Don’t hesitate to ask the clinic staff for advice: the team at BioPed is experienced in foot and lower-limb care and can help you pick something based on the recipient’s needs.

Know the shoe size, width, or any specific foot/leg concerns (e.g., heel pain, swelling, flat feet) and mention it when you visit.

If you’re short on time, call ahead and reserve the item—it saves hassle.

Consider bundling a few items (socks + nail polish + massage ball) for a “foot health pamper” gift pack.

When you’re running out of time but want a gift that matters, visit your local BioPed clinic. Whether it’s foot-care treats, functional support items or comfort essentials, you’ll find something that shows you’ve thought of the person and their well-being. At the end of the day, giving a gift that supports comfort, and movement also shows that you care. Happy gift hunting!

If you are dealing with foot pain, making the right choice in footcare matters. At BioPed, we believe your feet deserve more than a quick fix: they deserve a thorough and thoughtful approach that helps you live more comfortably and actively. Here’s why so many people trust BioPed and how our care can make a real difference.

How BioPed Helps with Foot Pain (and more)

At BioPed, we view foot health from three angles: relieving pain, enhancing performance, and preventing future trouble. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

A full clinical assessment by a Certified Pedorthist, Registered Chiropodist, or Advanced Footcare Nurse, to pinpoint the source of your discomfort

Gait analysis and, when needed, 3D casting or scanning for a medical device (orthotics, bracing) to begin building custom foot orthotics

Providing education about your foot structure, mechanics, footwear and any lower extremity conditions identified

On-site craftsmanship of custom orthotics, footwear modifications, and bracing adjustments

Follow-up visits to monitor progress and make adjustments to your medical items as necessary

Use of orthopaedic footwear, compression, nail/skin care and bracing when appropriate

Our clinics, led by clinicians, prioritise lower extremity health over retail. We bring together clinical expertise, custom solutions, and long-term care promotion under one roof.

Beyond the Feet: Addressing Knee Pain, Ingrown Toenails & More

At BioPed, our services extend beyond foot pain to include:

Knee pain and bracing

Assessment of joint alignment, muscle strength, and overall lower extremity biomechanics

Fitting of therapeutic knee braces and supports

Exercises and offloading strategies to reduce pain and stress on the joint

Ingrown toenails

Assessment of ingrown toenails, infections, and nail deformities

Conservative or surgical correction by our Chiropodists or Advanced Footcare Nurses

Routine/post-procedure care and prevention strategies

Other lower extremity conditions

Tendinopathies (e.g. Achilles tendinitis)

Shin splints or medial tibial stress syndrome

Hip or alignment-related issues (e.g. leg length discrepancy)

Flat feet, high arches, children’s concerns

Because we look at the entire kinetic chain, from foot to knee to hip, we can reduce symptoms upstream by stabilizing your foundation.

Be Proactive: Why Follow-Ups & Annual Check-Ups Matter

Prevention and early detection are cornerstones of lasting foot and lower limb health. Here’s how BioPed helps you stay ahead:

Scheduled follow-ups allow us to track progress, catch small changes, and fine-tune your orthotics or supports

Annual check-ups with your Pedorthist help detect wear patterns, shifts in alignment, or emerging pain before they worsen

Regular reviews of your shoes, activity levels, and gait help adapt your plan as life changes (weight, activity, aging)

Educational refreshers help you stay aware of signs that call for early intervention

By maintaining this ongoing relationship, we aim to keep you more active, more comfortable, and less likely to face setbacks.

Choosing BioPed means trusting a network of certified clinicians committed to your foot and lower extremity health. Our comprehensive approach, from diagnosis to custom treatment, follow-ups, and preventive check-ups, is designed to help you overcome pain and do more of what you love.

If you have ever considered getting custom orthotics to help with foot, knee, or back discomfort, you might have one important question: Does third-party insurance cover products like this? In short, yes, but it is plan dependent and there could be limitations or requirements from the insurance company. Understanding third-party insurance can be confusing. This blog will break it down so that you can make an informed decision and keep Doing More!

What Is Third-Party Insurance and How Does It Work?

In Canada, third-party insurance coverage typically refers to extended health benefits that are offered by your employer or purchased privately. It is provided by an organization other than the government, and covers items and services which are typically not covered by the government insurance. Third-party insurance varies widely from plan to plan and from company to company but may include custom orthotics or paramedical practitioner coverage.

Does Third-Party Insurance Cover Orthotics?

In many cases, custom orthotics are covered by most third-party plans, but they typically require certain criteria to be met. These criteria can include any or all of the following:

Medical Prescription: A prescription from a medical doctor or other recognized professional (Chiropodist, Nurse Practitioner) that names your condition (the reason you require the orthotics) indicating medical necessity of the custom orthotics.

Proper Documentation: This would include the gait analysis and biomechanical assessment confirming the medical necessity, as well as the breakdown of orthotic manufacturing process (materials used and how the cast of the feet were taken).

Detailed Invoice: The date of dispense, breakdown of the cost of the orthotics and the location of the manufacturing of the orthotics.

Proof of a Qualified Professional: The BioPed Pedorthist or Chiropodist’s certification number must be present on the paperwork.

Tips for Clients Navigating Insurance Coverage

Before your appointment, you should do some homework to create a smoother process.

Call your insurance provider before your appointment: Ask if you have custom orthotics coverage and whether you require a medical prescription with diagnosis. You’ll also want to know what type of healthcare professional can assess and dispense the orthotics per your plan. Finally, you’ll want to learn what amount your coverage is for. Some plans have a maximum limit and a frequency date. Even where coverage is present, you’ll likely have some out-of-pocket expenses. Most plans do not cover 100%.

Once you receive your new custom orthotics, keep all receipts and documentation. Most plans require detailed proof, and BioPed clients receive a full package to help streamline the claim.

We work closely with many insurance plan providers and will help you navigate the claim submission process and provide a quote where it is necessary to predetermine coverage. We confirm your medical need for custom orthotics through a detailed assessment process and issue all required paperwork for insurance claim submission to ensure a smooth, simplified process. Insurance reimbursement direct to the plan member who submits – you! – is typically expedited.

Foot pain, knee pain, and foot care – all reasons to visit a BioPed clinic! At BioPed clinics, you could have an assessment with a Chiropodist, Pedorthist or Footcare Nurse. Each role is vital to our foot care team, and we hope to clarify the differences.

Chiropodists

Chiropodists are practitioners who specialize in the care of the foot and ankle, which can range in treatments from surgical nail interventions, orthotic therapy, and amongst many others. The majority of Chiropodists in Ontario obtain their education and credential of Diploma of Chiropody (D.Ch.) from the Michener Institute of Applied Sciences in Toronto.

The more familiar term may be a “Podiatrist” or Podiatry” – popularized through the American usage, their practitioners often hold a Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) acquired from schools internationally. However, as of 1993, from the Chiropody Act of 1991 Ontario Legislation, all incoming members are to be formally known as Chiropodists. As of 2024, the College of Chiropodists of Ontario has 806 active Chiropodists registered.

At BioPed, your Chiropodist can attend to needs such as prescribing custom foot orthoses, wart removal, or even simple routine foot care and nail care, such as ingrown toenail, corn or callus trimming.

Canadian Certified Pedorthists

A Canadian Certified Pedorthist, to which this article will refer to as a Pedorthist, carries the designation of C. Ped (C). The only pedorthic program in Canada that confers a Diploma of Pedorthics is at Western University in Ontario. Their speciality is in the biomechanical examination of the lower extremity, studying gait abnormalities, and addressing them with custom foot orthoses (orthotics), bracing and footwear. Pedorthists are especially skilled in the fabrication of orthotics, and often make them just as so, custom and by hand.

From the College of Pedorthics of Canada, they approximate ~600 members across Canada, with about ~400 in Ontario. Nationally, we employ 148 pedorthists who network and educate each other to ensure that we offer best-in-class client care.

Foot Care Nurses

A foot care nurse often holds the title of a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN), and will often take additional certification to train and specialize in the foot.

They are skilled removing corns, ingrown toenails, and even attending to warts as part of their all encompassing foot care. For most general case purposes, the Foot Care Nurse is the person to see.

How We Work Together

Foot Pain, or Knee Pain?

When addressing foot pain or knee pain, it is more often than not, musculoskeletal in nature. This means there is likely an imbalance of pressure, stress, and physical exertion upon the structures in your foot and leg.

While measures such as physiotherapy, stretching, and exercise can alleviate the pain, it can be helpful to address the root cause of the pain with a supportive device. This is where your Chiropodist or Pedorthist can come in, assess your biomechanical deficiencies, and correct them with an orthotic or brace.

While a Chiropodist is able to prescribe an orthotic, they will work in coordination with Pedorthists to create them and ensure the device treats your needs. Either can perform the assessment and fitting!

Skin or Toenail Care?

Sometimes, the problems we encounter on our feet are related to the skin and dermatological lesions. Our nails make up a large source of problems, through fungus, ingrown nails, or plain thick nails that need professional work performed to restore them to a healthy state. Thick skin and callus/corns are a sore for many. The most common association we see this with are for patients with diabetes, where the feet become at risk. Regular foot care and maintenance will prevent this and keep the feet in good shape.

Foot Care Nurses and Chiropodists can both see these foot check ups, and lesions such as warts, while a Chiropodist can see to any high risk surgical intervention.

Come See Us!

When it comes to accessing the care in our clinics, a common question is whether the province’s health plan will cover the cost. Programs such as OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), HIBC (Health Insurance British Columbia), Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) and MSI (Medical Services Insurance) typically do not cover the items or services offered at BioPed for your foot health. Fortunately, coverage for treating your foot-related conditions such as plantar fasciitis and diabetes is often available through third-party insurance plans and other government programs. We’ve got the differences outlined below on how these options can lend a hand when it comes to managing your foot pain and discomfort.

Third-Party Insurance Coverage

Where most people will find coverage for their treatment plan at BioPed is through their health insurance or extended health benefits. These plans are typically offered through your place of work and provide coverage or reimbursement for healthcare services and medical items. Each BioPed clinic is well-equipped to create and provide the necessary paperwork required for an insurance claim. \

While there is no fee for assessments with Certified Pedorthists, most BioPed clinics have fees for appointments with a Registered Chiropodist or Footcare Nurse, and these fees could potentially be covered by your insurance plan. For more detailed information, we recommend reaching out to your local BioPed clinic directly. The clinical team at BioPed is always available to help you understand your plan coverage and provide valuable information when it comes to discussing with your insurance provider.

Government Assistance Programs

In addition to third-party insurance, various government programs beyond provincial health plans may offer coverage for BioPed products. Provincially funded disability programs such as ODSP, AADL and BCEA are examples of such initiatives, and we can coordinate with them to ensure you can access what funding might be available for you. In addition, some work-related injuries that are being managed by agencies like the WSIB, WCB – Alberta, WCB – Nova Scotia or WorkSafe BC may also provide funding for certain prescribed medical items. Our dedicated clinical team is equipped to assist you in navigating your coverage options available through these programs.

Referral and Prescription Requirements:

Contrary to some healthcare services, you do not need a referral to schedule an appointment with a BioPed Pedorthist. However, once a treatment plan is in place, it’s helpful to generate a quote for your insurance company to help you best understand coverage for specific medical items. Most insurance plans will require a prescription for specific devices like braces or custom orthotics before coverage can be provided, which is typically obtained from your family doctor or nurse practitioner (NP). Your BioPed clinic is happy to share a detailed report of your appointment with your doctor/NP, ensuring they are kept in the loop when it comes to managing your foot health and wellness.

Skin and toenail services, such as those provided by a Chiropodist or Footcare Nurse may require a referral per your benefit plan. We recommend that you contact your insurer to understand your obligations prior to your first visit.

Addressing Financial Constraints:

For those who are unable to access third-party insurance or government assistance, we are still willing and able to help. At BioPed, we begin with an assessment to determine the cause of your pain and look for ways to help to improve it. We are committed to finding solutions for your pain relief or injury prevention, and we have a wide variety of affordable options in our clinics to create your very own treatment plan with us.

Come See Us!

Take the proactive step toward better lower limb health by scheduling a visit to BioPed. As the largest network of lower limb care providers in Canada, serving over a million Canadians in the past four decades, we are dedicated to providing quality care and solutions for your foot, leg and knee health needs. Don’t delay—discover why BioPed is a trusted name in lower limb health today!

As we gear up to celebrate Foot Health Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to pause and give our often-overlooked feet some well-deserved attention. Our feet carry us all day, every day, through life, yet we often neglect their care until they demand our attention. This May, let’s prioritize foot health and make strides towards happier, healthier feet. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you step into Foot Health Awareness Month with confidence:

Understanding Foot Health

Our feet are marvels of engineering, consisting of 26 bones, 33 joints, and a network of over 100 muscles, tendons, and ligaments. They provide support, balance, and mobility, allowing us to walk, run, and conquer daily activities. However, neglecting foot health can lead to a myriad of issues, including pain, discomfort, and mobility issues.

Importance of Foot Care

Proper foot care isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s crucial for overall well-being. Neglecting foot health can contribute to various conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, calluses and corns, ingrown toenails, and more. Your feet can also serve as early warning signs for systemic conditions like diabetes, arthritis, and circulatory problems. By prioritizing foot care, we can prevent many of these issues and maintain an active lifestyle.

At-Home Tips for Healthy Feet

Maintain Proper Hygiene: Wash your feet daily with warm water and mild soap, paying attention to the spaces between your toes. Afterward, ensure they’re thoroughly dried to prevent fungal infections.

Choose the Right Footwear: Opt for shoes that provide enough support, cushioning, and room for your toes to move freely. Avoid shoes that are too tight as they can lead to discomfort and painful foot deformities.

Practice Good Nail Care: Trim your toenails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Avoid cutting them too short or rounding the edges, as this can increase the risk of painful ingrown nails.

Moisturize Regularly: Keep your feet hydrated by applying moisturizer, especially to dry areas like cracked heels and the balls of your feet. Avoid applying too much between the toes, as it can increase the risk of athlete’s foot.

Stay Active: Regular physical activity improves circulation and strengthens the muscles in your feet. Incorporate exercises like walking, stretching, and toe curls into your routine to promote foot health.

Check Your Feet Regularly: Inspect your feet for any signs of cuts, blisters, swelling, or discoloration. Early detection of foot problems allows for prompt intervention and prevents complications.

Spend Some Time Barefoot: While we want to keep our feet supported for work and strenuous activity, it is still a great idea to let your feet breathe, and walking on different textures can be healthy for the small muscles and nerves in your feet. If you have peripheral neuropathy or diabetes, talk to your family doctor or foot health expert to make sure this is safe for you!

Know Your Foot Health Experts

Incorporating the expertise of Pedorthists, Chiropodists, and Foot Care Nurses into your foot care routine can be a game-changer, especially if you’re dealing with painful or persistent foot problems. At BioPed, the clinical team plays a crucial role in promoting foot health, preventing injuries, and enhancing overall well-being. So, if you’re looking to take proactive steps towards healthier feet, consider scheduling a consultation with us and experience the difference we can make in your life.

Come See Us!

During Foot Health Awareness Month, take the opportunity to educate others about the importance of foot care. We encourage you to share these informative resources, organize awareness events, or simply start a conversation about foot health with friends and family. Together, we can empower individuals to prioritize their foot health and take proactive steps towards happier, healthier lives.

When you have foot pain, it can be a relief knowing you have insurance coverage to help with the cost of keeping your feet happy and healthy. However, insurance plans can be confusing and difficult to navigate, especially if it’s all new to you! We’ve got you covered, with answers to some of your most frequently asked insurance coverage questions.

What is third party insurance?

Third party insurance or extended health care benefits are typically either provided to you by an employer or purchased yourself through an insurance company, to cover costs that your provincial healthcare plan does not cover. Orthotics, orthopedic shoes, orthopedic bracing for knees, ankles and toes, chiropody services and compression stockings are typically not covered through provincial healthcare. Most insurance companies offer coverage for these items, but different plans offer different levels of coverage.

What does my insurance plan cover?

No matter what insurance company you’re with, each plan can vary when it comes to the exact terms of coverage. It’s best to reach out to your provider with your plan number found on your member card to find out what coverage you have. These plans have either been negotiated by your employer or were chosen by you when you purchased it privately. It is helpful to have a quote for the items you are inquiring about. A quote or “estimate” or “predetermination” gives you details about the product, model number, specifications, service and price associated with it. This provides your insurance company with all the details they need to determine coverage before you choose to purchase/proceed with the product or service. It is always recommended to submit a quote or, at the very least, talk to your insurance provider before choosing to move forward with any orthopedic product so that you can make a financially informed decision.

What is the difference between medical or custom items and non-medical or over-the-counter items? Orthotics, shoes, braces, and compression come in all kinds of categories, both medical/custom and non-medical/over-the-counter. When requesting a quote, it is important to note which category they fall into as insurance plans vary on coverage, and these details make a difference. Most providers will not cover anything that can be purchased over-the-counter as they cannot ensure that a credentialed provider dispensed the item for a legitimate need. Medical and custom items must be dispensed by a registered/certified and approved provider with supporting documentation.

Do I need a prescription?

In most cases you will require a prescription from a physician or nurse practitioner (or in some cases, a chiropodist) to qualify for insurance coverage from your provider. The prescription indicates that the items you are asking for are medically necessary for your health and can help when the adjuster or adjudicator of your claim is processing it for reimbursement. You can ask about the prescription requirements when you submit a quote or by calling your provider with your plan number. However, to simply come for an assessment with a BioPed clinician, a prescription is not required. We can always advise and help you request one from your physician if it is necessary for insurance and policy standards.

What can we direct bill for?

We work closely with many insurance providers. BioPed is proud to be a preferred provider with several insurance companies and may have direct billing privileges for some items discussed here. It is always best to ask your local BioPed if they can direct bill for any items. These policies are set in place by the insurance industry. However, if we are unable to directly bill your items to your insurance provider, we will help you navigate the predetermination process to determine coverage, which can help you get your claims paid out faster.

When it comes to your feet, we want you to have all the answers to relieving your foot and lower limb pain. Insurance can be tricky, but your trusted BioPed team is here to help!

These sandals are not classic flip flops, but rather strap sandals, often a slip-on, with a cork or soft footbed that mould to the feet with wear. The firm footbed offers support and is designed to support the medial longitudinal arch of the foot, as well as have a deeper heel cup for more control of a flexible foot and a metatarsal mound at the forefoot to offload the ball of the foot in the case it has dropped. The adjustable nature of the straps also ensures your foot is less likely to slip out, allowing for increased comfort and support.

The bad and the ugly for all foot types

If you are choosing non orthopedic sandals, but true flip flops here are some things to consider. The construction of the flip flop itself is problematic. The materials themselves are often not of the best quality. They do not have an adjustable enclosure. Flip flops themselves are not typically made as supportive footwear. They do not properly strap onto the foot; by nature they flip and flop, wither as a slide style with a single wide strap across the forefoot, or a thong style with a piece that fits between the hallux (the big toe) and the second toe with two straps making a V over the forefoot. These straps do not secure the shoe to the foot in a supportive way, often causing harmful mechanics that cause cramping and soreness. Flip flops cause the toes to grip, resulting in hammering of the lesser digits and hallux valgus of the big toes (a veering of the great toe towards the lesser toes) which is a precursor mechanic to developing bunions. Furthermore, flip flops are made of a softer foam that compresses with use, wears out quickly, and they do not offer any integral support to the foot. While they may feel nice for a day or two or a week while on vacation, choosing them as a staple in your summer footwear rotation not only perpetuates existing issues, but can also cause new ones.

Flat feet

The flat foot needs support and control to maintain the neutral arch of the foot that flattened out during weight bearing. This excessive movement of the foot is a common cause of plantar fasciitis – the overstretching and aggravation of the plantar fascia, a supportive structure that runs the length of the foot, is meant to support, not over stretch, and this causes pain and discomfort. Treatment for plantar fasciitis and flat feet in general, is support and control. Most flip flops available are made of a flat foam material that does little to correct the excessive movement of a flexible flat foot type, and once the cushion wears out it’s not better than walking directly on the pavement.

High arches

High arched feet often cramp and have muscle pain from maintaining an unsupported shape throughout the day. Flip flops widen that gap and offer zero support for the higher arch to rest on. The flatbed of the flip flop does nothing to offload the heel and the ball of the foot (metatarsal heads) which takes all the pressure during weight bearing because of an unsupported arch. This can lead to increased development of calluses and corns, a thickening of the skin which can become painful in areas of high pressure.

When it’s time to make the switch

Flip flops may offer style for your feet, and are easy to slip in and out of quickly. However, if your feet hurt, it’s time to switch to something more supportive.
To sum up, you’ll probably want to reserve flip-flops for taking out the trash, showering at the gym, or wading at the beach. For anything more strenuous, opt for a more supportive sandal.

Congratulations on booking your first biomechanical appointment with your local BioPed Clinic! We understand that you are seeking relief from pain and discomfort caused by your feet or lower limbs, and we are here to help.

To prepare you for your appointment, let us walk you through what you can expect during your visit. We offer different types of appointments, including full assessments and compression fittings, and follow up appointments, but for the purpose here, let’s assume you are booked for a complete biomechanical assessment.

During your 45-minute appointment, a Canadian Certified Pedorthist or Registered Chiropodist* will conduct a comprehensive, hands-on biomechanical assessment focused on your feet and how they move. They will also take into account how the rest of your lower limbs and upper body move through gait, as well as other factors, such as your lifestyle, potential sources of pain, health conditions, medications, previous injuries, footwear, activity level, and workplace environment.

Your BioPed clinician will perform a range of tests, including a(n):

Walking / gait analysis

Examination of joints and muscles while seated and standing

Muscle strength evaluation

Foot, ankle, knee, hip alignment

Joint flexibility assessment

In order to determine if and where abnormal function and mechanics exist.

Additionally, your Pedorthist/Chiropodist will ask you further questions where applicable and review your current footwear for fit and function.

After completing the assessment, your BioPed clinician will explain their findings and you’re your input, develop an optimal treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. They will discuss all possible solutions that would be helpful based on your condition, mechanics and symptoms, and recommend the best course of action for your feet and lower limbs. Possible solutions may include orthotics, shoes/shoe modifications, skin or nail care, compression socks or bracing.

At BioPed, we take a unique approach to the assessment, fabrication, fitting, and adjustment of orthotics to ensure that you get the best possible result for your feet and lower limbs. We are committed to providing exceptional care to help you alleviate foot and lower limb pain and get you back to doing more of what you love in life.

*Registered Chiropodists can provide prescriptions for orthotics, orthopedic footwear, compression and foot/ankle bracing. There is a fee for Chiropody Services.
