Do you experience a burning or tingling sensation in the ball of your foot or between your toes? You may have what’s known as a foot neuroma — and treatments like cortisone injections or shockwave therapy can help relieve your pain and discomfort.

What Is a Foot Neuroma?

A neuroma (often called a Morton’s Neuroma) is a thickening or irritation of a nerve in the foot, most commonly found between the third and fourth toes. This can cause sharp, burning pain, numbness, or the feeling that you’re standing on a pebble. Footwear that compresses the toes or repetitive pressure on the ball of the foot can make symptoms worse.

How Cortisone Injections Can Help

Cortisone injections are a common and effective treatment for reducing inflammation and pain associated with a neuroma. Cortisone (a corticosteroid medication similar to the natural hormone cortisol produced by the body) works by calming nerve irritation and surrounding tissue inflammation.

Because the cortisone is delivered directly to the site of pain, it can provide faster, more targeted relief than oral anti-inflammatory medications. The injection typically includes both the corticosteroid and a local anesthetic — the anesthetic provides immediate numbing relief, while the cortisone reduces inflammation over the following days.

Benefits

Rapid reduction in pain and nerve irritation

Allows healing to occur more effectively when paired with orthotics or modified footwear

Relief can last anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months

Shockwave Therapy for Neuromas

Shockwave therapy (also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy or ESWT) is another non-surgical treatment that stimulates healing in damaged tissue around the neuroma. The therapy uses acoustic waves that increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and encourage tissue regeneration.

Benefits

Non-invasive and drug-free

Encourages natural repair of the nerve environment

Typically performed over several short sessions with no downtime

Side Effects and Safety

Both cortisone injections and shockwave therapy are generally safe and well-tolerated. However, as with all medical procedures, there are some potential side effects and precautions.

Cortisone Injections

Minor risks include:

Temporary soreness or “cortisone flare” lasting 24–48 hours

Bruising or localized numbness

Slight elevation in blood glucose for people with diabetes

Rarely, tissue thinning or tendon rupture with repeated injections

Resting for 24 hours after a cortisone injection and avoiding strenuous activity for a few days helps ensure the best outcome. A maximum of 3–4 injections per year is usually recommended for safety.

Shockwave Therapy

Possible temporary effects include:

Mild bruising, redness, or tenderness in the treatment area

Short-term discomfort during or after the procedure

Most patients can resume normal activity immediately following shockwave sessions.

Is One Treatment Right for You?

Not everyone responds the same way to treatment. Some patients benefit most from a combination of shockwave therapy or cortisone injections, along with supportive care like custom orthotics or footwear modifications to reduce pressure on the affected nerve.

If you think you may have a neuroma, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider or one of BioPed’s lower limb clinicians. They can assess your symptoms and recommend the most effective treatment for your needs.

Pain in your feet can stop you in your tracks. At BioPed Footcare, our goal is to help alleviate your foot pain with effective, high-integrity solutions that empower you to Do More in life! If you have pain in your foot due to an acute injury or chronic issue, you may benefit from taping or cortisone. Let’s dive into how both can help ease foot pain and get you back on the right track!

Taping

Taping is typically used for two reasons: to protect a joint from injury or to stabilize an existing injury. It can limit joint range-of-motion or support an ideal foot position to offer relief as a short-term modality. Taping is beneficial for sports and musculoskeletal injuries as it is effective in facilitating rehabilitation.

Zinc oxide tape is a type of rigid tape used to restrict the range of motion. Pain in your big toe joint may be caused by an injury such as Turf toe or due to chronic discomfort from arthritis. Spica taping can alleviate pain in this joint as it immobilizes it, limiting movement. Plantar fasciitis or pain on the bottom of the heel, occurs when the plantar fascia tears away from the bone causing inflammation and pain. Low dye taping helps off-load the strain on the plantar fascia and provides arch support. Basket weave taping is the gold standard for treatment following an ankle sprain to aid in rehabilitation and to prevent re-injury, as it supports the lateral ankle joint complex.

Cortisone

A cortisone shot is an injection of a medicine that treats inflammation and relieves pain. It is a manufactured corticosteroid that closely resembles a naturally occurring hormone in the body known as cortisol. If you suffer from heel pain or plantar fasciitis, pain in your big toe joint or have been diagnosed with a neuroma, a cortisone injection may be a viable treatment option for you! All three of these ailments can be successfully treated with a cortisone shot as it decreases inflammation and offers a localized relief from pain. This is accomplished by delivering the cortisone directly to the site of concern by injection. Cortisone shots are usually a mixture of the corticosteroid medication and a local anesthetic. The local anesthetic offers immediate pain relief, numbing the area for a few hours afterwards.

A cortisone injection can significantly reduce localized inflammation anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months. It is a great adjunct to other treatments like taping and even custom foot orthotics as it allows damaged tissue to heal. Most people are good candidates for a cortisone injection into the foot, except for the following; children, those with a medication specific allergy or those who are already taking corticosteroids to treat another issue.

Cortisone shots are commonly used to treat inflammation and pain in the shoulders, back, hands, hips and knees. Did you know they can also be used for the FEET? A cortisone shot is an injection of a medicine that treats inflammation and relieves pain. It is a manufactured corticosteroid that closely resembles a naturally occurring hormone in the body known as cortisol. Corticosteroids are not to be mistaken for anabolic steroids which are widely frowned upon in sports due to their performance enhancing ability.

How does cortisone treat inflammation and pain?

If you suffer from heel pain or plantar fasciitis, pain in your big toe joint or have been diagnosed with a neuroma, a cortisone injection may be a viable treatment option for you! All three of these ailments can be successfully treated with a cortisone shot with the same mechanism of action as one in your knee – it decreases inflammation and offers a localized relief from pain. This is accomplished by delivering the cortisone directly to the site of concern by injection. In doing this, it works faster and more effectively than an oral anti-inflammatory, such as ibuprofen. Taking a pill to treat pain in the foot isn’t always successful because it must travel throughout the body with only a fraction of it actually reaching the foot. Cortisone injections are usually a mixture of the corticosteroid medication and a local anesthetic. The local anesthetic offers immediate pain relief, numbing the area for a few hours afterwards.

Is a cortisone Injection right for you?

A cortisone injection can significantly reduce localized inflammation anywhere between 6 weeks to 6 months. It is a great adjunct to other treatments like custom foot orthotics, as it allows damaged tissue to heal. Most people are good candidates for a cortisone injection into the foot, except for children, those with an allergy to cortisone or local anesthetic, or if they’re already taking corticosteroids to treat another issue. There are minor risks with these injections, such as infection, bruising, numbness, a temporary increase in blood glucose levels in people who have diabetes and plantar fascial/tendon rupture. A cortisone “flare” is a possibility but only results in an increase in pain and inflammation for approximately 48 hours following the treatment. If this happens, rest, ice and elevation can help. It’s important to remember, after a cortisone injection, rest is best! It’s a good idea to try to stay off your foot for 24 hours following an injection and refrain from strenuous activity and exercise for a few days. Resting is crucial to achieving an effective reduction in inflammation and pain. If another cortisone shot is needed to offer relief, you must wait at least 6 weeks after your last one. Generally, a maximum of 3-4 injections per year is advised and considered safe.
