Knee ligament injuries are common and can happen to anyone, from athletes to people going about their daily activities. These injuries can cause significant knee pain and disrupt your mobility. One effective way to support recovery is through bracing, which provides stability, reduces pain, and helps protect the knee as it heals. In this post, we’ll explore the ligaments of the knee, common injuries, and how to choose the right knee brace for your specific needs.

Understanding Knee Ligaments and Common Injuries

The knee is stabilized by four key ligaments, each with a specific function:

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)

Location: Runs diagonally through the center of the knee.

Function: Prevents the shinbone (tibia) from sliding forward.

Injury: Often injured during sports that involve sudden stops, jumps, or direction changes.

Pain: Usually felt deep in the knee, along with instability.

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)

Location: Runs behind the ACL in the center of the knee.

Function: Prevents the tibia from sliding backward.

Injury: Often occurs during falls or direct impacts to the shin.

Pain: Felt in the back of the knee.

Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)

Location: Runs along the inner side of the knee.

Function: Prevents the knee from bending inward.

Injury: Often caused by a blow to the outside of the knee.

Pain: Localized on the inner side of the knee.

Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)

Location: Runs along the outer side of the knee.

Function: Prevents the knee from bending outward.

Injury: Less common but can result from impact to the inside of the knee.

Pain: Felt on the outer side of the knee.

How Bracing Can Help with Knee Pain

Knee braces provide support, reduce pain, and protect the knee during recovery. Different types are suited to specific injuries:

Soft Sleeves

Lightweight and flexible, offering mild compression to reduce swelling and improve circulation.

Best for minor ligament sprains, patella tracking issues, or mild arthritis.

Hinged Knee Braces

Include side hinges for added stability, preventing sideways movement.

Ideal for MCL or LCL injuries and post-surgical recovery.

Rigid Frame Braces

Provide maximum support with a strong external frame to stabilize the knee and prevent re-injury.

Recommended for severe ACL or PCL injuries, especially for athletes or post-surgery.

Patella Stabilizing Braces

Keep the kneecap (patella) aligned to reduce pain and prevent instability.

Useful for combined ligament injuries or chronic patella issues.

Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf Braces

Custom Braces: Recommended for moderate to severe injuries, unique knee shapes, or long-term use. They provide a precise fit and maximum effectiveness.

Off-the-Shelf Braces: Ideal for less severe injuries or short-term use. They are convenient and cost-effective but may lack the tailored support of custom braces.

Steps to Recover from a Knee Ligament Injury

Recovery often requires a combination of treatments:

Physiotherapy: Strengthens the muscles around the knee and improves flexibility.

Activity Modification: Avoid activities that strain the knee until cleared by a healthcare professional.

Foot Support: Supportive shoes, along with custom orthotics, can improve alignment and reduce knee strain.

Bracing: Use a soft sleeve or rigid brace as recommended by a professional.

Long-Term Support: Consider a supportive brace for ongoing pain or arthritis.

An ACL injury can be life-changing, but the good news is that surgery isn’t always necessary for recovery. Many people can manage their symptoms and regain strength through non-surgical treatments. If you’re dealing with a torn or strained ACL, understanding your options can help you make the best decision for your body.

What is an ACL Injury?

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key ligaments in your knee. It helps stabilize the joint, especially during activities that involve sudden stops or changes in direction, such as jumping, pivoting, or running.

ACL injuries typically occur when the knee twists awkwardly or is subjected to high force, often during sports. Common signs and symptoms include:

A loud “pop” in the knee at the time of injury

Intense pain and inability to continue activity

Rapid swelling

Loss of full range of motion

Instability or “giving way” of the knee

Non-Surgical Treatment for ACL Injuries

While surgery is sometimes required, non-surgical options can effectively manage an ACL injury, especially if it’s a partial tear or if your lifestyle is not as physically demanding. Below are some non-surgical treatments that can help you recover:

Knee Bracing

Provides extra support to the injured knee by stabilizing it during movement.

Prevents further damage and helps in pain management.

Braces are often used during physical therapy or daily activities to prevent the knee from moving in harmful ways.

Physical Therapy

Strengthens the muscles around the knee, improving stability.

Focuses on regaining range of motion, building flexibility, and enhancing coordination.

Tailored exercises help reduce the risk of reinjury and restore knee function.

Custom Foot Orthotics

These devices improve alignment and reduce stress on the knee during walking or running.

Help to distribute weight evenly, decreasing strain on the injured ACL.

Especially helpful in correcting any foot mechanics issues that could lead to increased knee problems.

Pain Management

Anti-inflammatory medications can reduce swelling and discomfort.

Ice and/or heat therapy can also be beneficial in reducing pain and inflammation.

Preventing Reinjury

Once your ACL has healed, it’s essential to prevent further injuries. Reinjury is common, especially in athletes or those with an active lifestyle. Some ways to protect your knee include:

Knee Bracing for Stability

Even after recovery, wearing a knee brace during sports or strenuous activities can help protect the ACL from excessive strain.

Proper Footwear

Shoes with good arch support and cushioning can reduce the impact on your knees.

Athletic footwear should be appropriate for your specific sport or activity.

Custom Orthotics

Correct biomechanical issues that could lead to reinjury.

Offer extra support for your feet, which can positively affect your knee alignment and reduce stress on the ACL.

Physiotherapy

Regular exercises to maintain muscle strength around the knee.

Stretching routines to keep your ligaments and tendons flexible.

Seeing a Canadian Certified Pedorthist

A Pedorthist specializes in the biomechanics of feet and lower limbs, and they can design custom orthotics to reduce stress on your knee.

They can also recommend the best footwear and knee braces for your specific needs.

By working with a pedorthist, you can develop a personalized treatment plan to support your ACL recovery and prevent reinjury.

An ACL injury doesn’t always mean surgery. With proper treatment and support, many people recover without going under the knife. Knee bracing, physical therapy, and custom foot orthotics are just a few options that can help you heal. To ensure you have the best recovery plan, it’s always wise to consult a Canadian Certified Pedorthist, who can guide you toward better knee health and reduce the risk of future injury.

Knee ligament injuries can be a real pain especially when they stop you from doing the activities you love. But have no fear, with BioPed we are here to help you kick that knee pain to the curb.

Often ligament injuries are seen in activities that require running, jumping and sudden changes in direction. It could happen in your morning workout or even turning the wrong way at work.

There are four main ligaments in the knee:

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL)

Stabilizes the knee by preventing excessive forward movement and rotational movements

Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL)

Stabilizes the knee by preventing excessive backwards movement and rotational movements

Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL)

Stabilizes the knee by preventing excessive medial movement (to the inside)

Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL)

Stabilizes the knee by preventing excessive lateral movement (to the outside)

Symptoms most often will include pain, issues with stability, popping or crunching noises, inability to fully extend the knee etc. If you ever suspect that you have sustained a knee injury, it’s always best to first get in to see your doctor or nurse practitioner, as imaging might be required to see the full extent of the damage.

Should I look into knee bracing?

Knee bracing can be a fantastic solution to helping with a ligament injury. There are many different types and styles of braces, but most work to give stability to the knee. If the knee feels stable, you will feel more confident doing all the activities that you love to do. In addition to providing confidence, braces also work to limit motion in certain directions depending on what ligament the brace is specifically accounting for. This protects the ligament from additional damage and helps to offer support to the knee that the ligament lacks.

Types of knee bracing

Knee braces can be non-hinged or hinged.

Non-hinged knee bracing consists of mainly compression sleeve style braces. These braces help to aid the knee with mild stability but where they truly shine is aiding in reducing swelling and improving proprioception. Proprioception is our body’s ability to know where a limb is in location, movement and action. If we are more aware of the knee, we will be more balanced and apt to focus on stabilizing it and protecting it throughout the day. Often non-hinged knee braces are people’s first approach as they are cheaper and more readily available. The biggest issue with these are that they are often not a custom product which, depending on your leg, could mean they might have a tendency to slip, requiring readjusting.

If you haven’t worn one, chances are you’ve seen someone wear a hinged knee brace. These braces are often slightly bulkier than non-hinged knee braces but give much more stability to the knee joint. Over the years, hinged braces have come on the market that are less bulky and quite comfortable. Often used in more severe injuries, a rigid styled brace has the benefit of having over-the-counter (OTC) and custom options. Custom knee bracing is best used in severe injury cases and when leg shape causes issues with OTC brace fitting.

3 factors to consider when choosing the perfect brace

Severity of injury

As the injury gets more severe, the style of the brace also will change. A mild grade sprain often requires a more cloth based low profile brace whereas with a grade 3 injury you might want to consider a rigid shell brace.

Level of activity

For someone who leisurely walks and isn’t involved in high intensity sport often, maximal protection and support is not always necessary.

Comfort

No matter how great the brace, you won’t wear a brace that is not comfortable. When looking for a brace look for the best combination of comfort and function. This will make getting back into the game that much easier.
