The holidays are a time for celebration, family gatherings, special dinners, and dancing the night away. While your mind is ready for the fun, your feet might need a little support. Long hours of standing, walking, and dancing (often in less-than-comfortable shoes) can leave your feet feeling tired and sore. That’s where orthotics and supportive slippers can be a game-changer. With the right support, you can keep your feet comfortable and ready for every occasion, from cookie baking to cocktail parties.

Orthotics: Comfort You Can Count On

Custom orthotics are designed to fit the unique shape of your feet. Orthotics help to align the foot and leg, distributing weight and pressure across the entire foot by cradling the arch. A BioPed Clinician will be able to address specific concerns and design the orthotic to provide the maximum support while still providing the maximum comfort. You will notice improved support and reduced fatigue in the feet and legs, which can make a huge difference when spending extra hours on your feet during the busy holiday season.

Why Support Matters During the Holidays

The time spent on our feet increases during the holiday season, between the shopping trips, decorating cookies, and dancing the night away, our feet work overtime! Wearing supportive footwear indoors can prevent soreness and keep you on your feet for longer. Pairing your custom orthotics with supportive slippers can provide your feet with more stability and the comfort they deserve.

Don’t Forget Your Slippers: Support Starts at Home

After a long day of shopping, hosting, or celebrating, kicking off your shoes and slipping into a pair of slippers feels amazing! However, not all slippers are created equal. Many big box store slippers offer warmth but little to no support. The lack of support can lead to trips, falls and to tired, achy feet and legs. Supportive slippers can offer the best of both worlds, designed with a harder sole, arch support and comfy lining, your feet will thank you. Supportive slippers are always available at BioPed Footcare Clinics, and many styles can even accommodate your custom orthotics. This dynamic combo will help you feel comfortable from the moment you hit the ground running to the moment you fall into bed!

Visit a BioPed Clinic Near You!

This holiday season, treat yourself to comfort and support. Whether you need custom orthotics, supportive slippers, or dancing shoes, your local BioPed Clinic can help you find the right solution to keep your feet happy and your holidays bright. When your feet feel good, you can celebrate longer, dance a little longer and just enjoy the holiday season in comfort.

Finding the right footwear for your feet is just as essential as getting the perfect glasses for your eyes from an eye specialist. In fact, our feet are amazing structures that carry us through life and require expert care to function properly. They act as shock absorbers and levers with each step we take, and when our feet are in good health, we hardly ever think about them. However, when problems arise, they can significantly impact our quality of life and bring us to a grinding halt.

We seldom make the connection, but our quality of life is largely dependent on our foot health. Many foot issues can be caused by genetic predispositions or conditions, such as diabetes or arthritis, while others may result from overuse, traumatic injuries, or improper footwear. Fortunately, Canadian Certified Pedorthists are specifically trained to address foot and lower limb biomechanical conditions.

As graduates with an undergraduate degree, typically in kinesiology or science, and a graduate diploma in Pedorthics, be assured that their background and training in biomechanics is thorough. Canadian Certified Pedorthists, C. Ped (C)s, are experts in the design, modification, and manufacture of footwear, custom foot orthotics and supportive devices to address lower limb pain and conditions. They work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners and patients to ensure feet are well cared for. Also, Pedorthists are compression fit certified, lower limb brace experienced, and footwear fit experts. And if no off-the-shelf shoe is working, they can modify footwear to ensure shoes not only fit but also function.

At BioPed Footcare, the mission of our Canadian Certified Pedorthists is to alleviate pain, prevent tissue and joint damage, and restore foot function, allowing clients to lead more fulfilling lives. They do this by conducting a full biomechanical assessment, comprised of assessing symptoms, gait analysis, and medical history to determine the best possible solution for you.

If you are experiencing any foot pain, have limited mobility, or discomfort from a condition, such as bunions or knee arthritis, a visit to a BioPed Pedorthist can provide the relief you need and help you do more of what you love.

Put your feet and lower limbs in good hands with a Canadian Certified Pedorthist at any of BioPed Footcare’s 85+ clinics across Canada! Find a BioPed Footcare clinic near you today by clicking below.

As a child grows and develops, it is normal for their feet and legs to change considerably. From birth to about 10-years-old the long arch of the foot is expected to transition from “flat-footedness” to what is considered a “normal arch.” During this slow and gradual process, a child may complain of pain. You also may notice that something does not look quite right. In this blog, we will discuss the role of a Canadian Certified Pedorthist to assess and treat the child if necessary.

Foot, leg or knee pain is a definite cause to see your doctor and consider visiting a pedorthist. But, another reason for a foot and leg pedorthic assessment is when young children are not meeting developmental milestones. According to the Boston Children’s Hospital, normal early milestones include:

6 months, most babies can sit with support and rollover.

9 months, most babies learn to crawl.

9-12 months, most babies will pull themselves up to standing by holding onto furniture. At this stage, babies can walk with support but not independently.

11-16 months, most babies will start to walk without support.

2 years, most toddlers can go upstairs one step at a time and jump in place.

3 years, most children can go up the stairs reciprocally and stand on one foot.

4 years, most children can go down the stairs reciprocally and hop on one foot.

*Note these are general averages and estimates. Your physician or nurse practitioner can better assess your child’s specific developmental progress.

Does my child need to see a Pedorthist?

Common signs

Complaints of pain in the foot, ankle, leg, knee, hip and/or lower back (sometimes these complaints are most notable after sport/physical activity, at nighttime, or first thing in the morning)

Withdraws from sport/physical activity due to pain

A noticeable difference between one foot and the other (e.g. one long (inside) arch is lower than the other)

Ankles appear to be rolling in or out when standing and/or walking

Excessive wear on the soles of the child’s shoes

A rapid and significant growth spurt

When the child stands and walks, the toes appear pointed inward or considerably outward

Walking on the balls of the feet the majority of the time

When there has been no change in the height of the long (inside) arch over time

Any lower limb muscle, joint or neurological concerns

Treatment for the above concerns varies.

Treatment

Additional factors found during an assessment such as; the age of the child, the physical movement of joints, the child’s activity level, the type of sport or activity they participate in and the degree of past or current injuries affect treatment. Treatment can allow injuries to heal or prevent future issues and injuries from occurring.

The most common treatment recommendations include:

Over-the-counter (otc) inserts

Wearing supportive footwear daily (indoor and outdoor use)

Stretching and/or muscle-specific exercises

Custom made foot orthotics

It is not uncommon for a combination of two or more recommendations.
