Have you been able to make the most out of the summer? Getting out to the beach, hiking a trail through a forest, or playing your favourite sport? If so, you may have encountered a common problem: sweaty feet. Walking around all day in heavy boots or running around in the same shoes will cause significant foot perspiration and the strong desire to do your laundry more regularly.

While sweating and sweaty feet are normal to help us to cool down, there can come a time where it starts to cause problems. Beyond just a stinky smell, a medically excessive amount of sweating is called hyperhidrosis, and on the feet, plantar hyperhidrosis. This can lead to:

Blisters & Skin Breakdown

When there is too much moisture consistently due to sweaty feet, the skin can either develop blisters from the friction, or breakdown entirely. This can cause pain and discomfort and create an uncomfortable experience.

Fungal Infections

Certain microbes thrive in wet environments, and fungus is one of them. They enjoy cool, dark, and damp places, which are all conditions foot perspiration will create.

Odour and Bacteria Overgrowth

That foot odour isn’t just smelly – it is a sign of bacteria, which is the source of the stench. In combination with openings created in the skin, we can get a much more serious infection of bacteria, leading to swelling and risk of further complications.

Ruined Shoes and Socks

With constant moisture, socks and shoes can become damaged, or ridden with fungal organisms. There are UV lights available to treat shoes, but some choose to discard them.

Top Survival Tips

Let the feet breathe – Whenever you can, knock the shoes off and let the puppies out. The air flow will help to dry out the sweaty feet and cool them down.

Antiperspirant use – The use of medications such as Drysol (aluminum chloride hexahydrate) will stop the sweat glands from overproducing.

Clean Sweep® is an excellent solution that is also easy to use. With its Nanosilver formula, it effectively combats surface level bacteria, fungus, and odour when used regularly on your shoes.

Correct Sock Selection – Merino wool and synthetic polyester blends have great breathability and will allow sweaty feet to breathe. Silver/copper infused socks will be naturally antibacterial.

Rotating Shoes – Despite our best efforts to prevent foot perspiration, it will occur, and we need to let the shoes breathe and dry out on their own too.

Foot Hygiene – We can change our habits to include more frequent washing, drying between the toes, or using epsom salt baths more regularly.

When to see a BioPed Clinician

After trying your best, sweaty feet can still occur, and may require medical intervention. If you still experience persistent wetness, frequent infections, or an emotional and social impact, you may want to try seeing one of our BioPed clinicians.

They can discuss all aforementioned advice, but also give mention to prescription grade anti-perspirants, iontophoresis, or referrals towards injections, oral medications, or surgery.

If you are still struggling with sweaty feet after reading our survival guide, book an appointment at your nearest BioPed location today!

Dealing with sweaty feet can be uncomfortable, embarrassing, and even lead to other foot issues if left untreated. Sweaty feet, also known as plantar hyperhidrosis, occurs when the sweat glands in your feet produce excessive moisture. For some, it’s a mild annoyance, while others may experience a constant damp feeling, leading to skin irritation, unpleasant odour, and even infections. Understanding the causes and solutions for this condition can help you stay comfortable and protect your feet.

Common Foot Conditions Linked to Excessive Sweating

Excessive sweating can lead to several foot-related problems, including:

Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis): A fungal infection that thrives in moist environments, causing itching, burning, and cracked skin, particularly between the toes.

Blisters: Constant moisture weakens the skin, making it more prone to friction and blisters.

Peeling Skin: Prolonged moisture can cause the skin to become soft and eventually peel, making your feet more vulnerable to infection.

Foot Odour: Bacteria thrive in the moist environment created by excessive sweating, leading to unpleasant foot odour.

Medical Solutions to Manage Sweaty Feet

If home remedies aren’t enough, there are specialized medical products that can provide effective relief.

Home Remedies and Preventative Tips

To keep sweaty feet under control and prevent associated foot problems, consider these simple yet effective steps:

Wash Feet Daily: Use an antibacterial soap and dry thoroughly, especially between the toes.

Apply Antiperspirant: Special foot antiperspirants can reduce sweating when applied regularly.

Wear Breathable Socks and Shoes: Opt for moisture-wicking socks and ventilated shoes to minimize sweat buildup.

Foot Powders: Talcum or antifungal powders can help absorb moisture and prevent infections.

Rotate Footwear: Avoid wearing the same shoes daily to allow them to dry completely.

Soak Feet in Tea or Vinegar: Soaking feet in black tea or apple cider vinegar can temporarily reduce sweating and bacteria.

Why You Should See a Registered Chiropodist or Foot Care Nurse

If excessive sweating persists despite home treatments, it’s best to consult a Registered Chiropodist or Foot Care Nurse. They can:

Properly diagnose the severity of your condition.

Recommend personalized treatment plans or prescribe stronger medical solutions.

Provide professional care for any secondary issues, such as infections or peeling skin.

Take Control of Your Foot Health

By managing sweaty feet effectively, you can avoid discomfort and prevent complications. Whether using high-quality products like Footlogix or seeking advice from a foot care professional, taking proactive steps can make a world of difference.

Have you ever taken your shoes off and been accosted by an offensive and pungent odour? Sweaty feet can lead to smelly feet, which can cause embarrassment and social awkwardness!

Our feet have over 250,000 sweat glands and on average, they perspire the equivalent of one cup of sweat per day. This moisture builds up, creating a breeding ground for microorganisms. In turn, these microorganisms, most commonly bacteria and fungi, consume dead skin cells, leading to waste production and resultant shoe odour. Odour can also be caused by components of our sweat.

Sweating is a natural process in the body that helps regulate temperature. Wearing socks and shoes all day can exacerbate sweating and could lead to foot odour. Excessive sweating is known as hyperhidrosis (hi-pur-hi-DROE-sis) and may cause social anxiety and embarrassment. If you notice your feet and shoes are smelly, you may have developed bromhidrosis (brohm-hi-DROE-sis), a complication of hyperhidrosis caused by the presence of bacteria.

We have a solution that will help you and your gear smell fresher longer! With proper use, Clean Sweep® spray eliminates 99.9% of odour-causing bacteria and fungi.

How Does Clean Sweep® Work?

Clean Sweep® utilizes a nanosilver formula to safely and effectively kill the bacteria causing shoe odour. It neutralizes odour and contains no toxic ingredients, fragrances or carcinogens.

Directions on use:

Shake well before using

Spray directly and thoroughly into footwear on a regular basis until odour-free

Allow to dry overnight before wearing

Repeat as necessary

It is important to allow the shoes to dry completely to prevent the socks from absorbing the Clean Sweep® coating, which could reduce the effectiveness. Clean Sweep® reactivates with perspiration and therefore remains effective long after the shoe is sprayed!

How can you treat and prevent sweaty feet at home?

Change socks daily and throughout the day if needed. Choose socks comprised of breathable and moisture wicking materials. Polyester, nylon, and wool are most effective at keeping the moisture level more balanced and skin on the feet healthier.

Always try to wear shoes made of breathable materials, such as leather or mesh.

Wash your feet daily to keep the surface of the skin clean which will reduce the risk for bacterial and fungal infections. If an odour is present, using an anti-bacterial soap to wash feet can help.

Applying rubbing alcohol or using a foot powder can help to wick away moisture on the skin. Rubbing alcohol is an astringent, which dries the skin and an antiseptic, which cleans the skin. Some foot powders are formulated with antimicrobials to lessen the presence of fungus and bacteria. Powder can also cool and soothe irritated skin.

As discussed above, always remember to treat your shoes, braces, and orthotics with Clean Sweep® spray!

If you think you could have an infection, contact your Primary Care Provider or your BioPed Medical Footcare Clinician to be assessed. For more information about smelly feet or to pick up a bottle of Clean Sweep® spray, come visit us at BioPed today!

A blister is a common skin lesion that manifests as a bubble of fluid under the skin. The clear, watery liquid inside a blister is called serum. Blisters develop as a reaction to injured skin. If the blister remains unopened, the serum can provide natural protection for the skin beneath it. Medically speaking, small blisters are called vesicles and those larger than half an inch are called bullae. A blood blister is filled with blood, or a mixture of blood and serum.

How do foot blisters develop?

The most common cause of blisters on our feet are from friction, caused by wearing shoes that don’t fit well. The shoe may be too long, short, narrow, or wide. It might also mean that the toe box does not have enough depth or that the shape of the shoe is not appropriate for your foot type. Our skin has layers and when there is friction or trauma, the layers move on one another, and fluid collects in the affected pocket of tissue.

What are the other causes of foot blisters?

Allergies – Contact Dermatitis is the medical term for an allergic skin reaction. Certain fabrics, detergents, adhesives, soaps, plants, or creams can cause a rash with small blisters. A topical cream can be purchased over the counter or prescribed to help with the itch, redness, and discomfort.

Irritation – Chemical exposure or extreme temperatures leading to sunburns or frostbite can cause blistering. Trauma due to force, pinching or rubbing can also create a blister, or even a blood blister. It’s best to seek medical advice to make sure further complications are not a concern.

Infection – Bacteria, viruses and fungal infections can also cause blistering. These infections can resemble each other and almost always require treatment with an anti-microbial medicine to avoid spreading.

Medications – Some medications can cause blistering as a reaction in the skin, or they may cause photosensitivity to the sun which can make you more susceptible to a sunburn. If you started a new medication and suddenly noticed blistering, contact your primary care provider right away!

Systemic Medical Conditions – Some autoimmune conditions may cause blistering such as pemphigoid, dermatitis herpetiformis and various viral infections can also cause blisters to develop. Seeking the advice of a medical professional may be an opportunity to identify a condition that needs to be treated.

Come See Us!

Medical footcare clinicians such as BioPed’s Chiropodists and Footcare Nurses can assess and treat skin conditions such as blisters. It is recommended you don’t pop blisters. If the blister is suspected to be infected, your foot care clinician may drain it for you and treat it accordingly. Your BioPed lower limb health care team will collaborate and recommend the best next steps for healing, which may also include a footwear assessment or biomechanical intervention to correct the way you walk and move about.

The largest organ in the body is our skin. Made up of over 60% water, its main function is protection acting as a waterproof barrier that shields us from the elements in our environment, including chemicals and microorganisms. It regulates our body temperature and gives us the ability to feel things, such as hot and cold temperatures.

The skin consists of 3 layers:

Epidermis is the layer we see on the surface.

Dermis is the layer in the middle and is the connective tissue layer containing extracellular components, hair follicles, glands and collagen.

Hypodermis is the most inside layer containing adipose or fat tissue.

As a protective barrier, our skin is at risk for certain conditions and issues developing. To help maintain the health of the skin, maintaining moisture balance is key! Skin that is too dry or too moist is weaker and therefore its integrity is compromised. When this happens, it is more susceptible to cracks and injury. Colder weather temperatures have less humidity and therefore skin may become drier. As we endure winter weather in Canada, it is important to know how to keep your skin in tip top condition!

Dry skin is also known as xerosis (zr-ow-suhs) and can be rough, scaly, flaky, and often feels tight or itchy. Dry skin on our feet can be particularly problematic because of the large amount of weight, pressure, and stress they bear as we move about. The bottoms of the feet are prone to developing thickened skin due to pressure and friction, which can easily crack open if skin is dry. A crack in the skin breaches our protective barrier. Bacteria and other microorganisms can easily enter even the tiniest opening and may cause an infection that can threaten our overall health.

Dry skin left untreated may lead to problems

If your skin has painful cracks, open sores that just won’t heal, scratches caused by itchiness or discoloration, it is best to seek the advice of a foot care clinician. BioPed has medical footcare clinicians who will assess your feet and skin, determine possible causes and provide treatment solutions. There could also be an underlying health issue that is causing your dry skin and together with your primary care professional, they can help get you back on the right track!

How can you achieve healthier skin at home?

Wash your feet daily using a mild soap and be sure to dry well in between your toes.

Wash with warm water, not hot, as it can be too drying.

While the skin is still moist, apply a moisturizer that contains urea, an effective skin softener.

Using a humidifier in your home will add moisture to the air in the winter months.

Eating a balanced diet will provide important vitamins and minerals that help keep skin healthy.

Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water can help increase skin’s moisture level.

Our feet are incredible structures that play a crucial role in our daily lives, providing support, mobility, and balance. Despite their importance, they often go unnoticed until problems arise. To maintain healthy feet and avoid discomfort or pain, we’ve put together some helpful tips to help you keep your feet in excellent condition as we step into the new year.

Choose the Right Footwear

Selecting the right footwear will be one of the most important things you can do to ensure good foot health. Poorly fitting shoes can lead to bunions, corns and calluses. Shoes with weak support can aggravate conditions like plantar fasciitis and heel spurs! It’s important to ensure that your shoes are the correct size, provide good arch support, and have enough cushioning to absorb pressure.

Maintain Good Hygiene

Proper foot hygiene is essential to prevent infections and odour. To maintain healthy feet, start by washing them daily with warm water and mild soap. Don’t forget to dry them thoroughly, paying extra attention to the spaces between your toes. Additionally, make it a habit to trim your toenails straight across on a regular basis to prevent ingrown toenails.

Support Your Arches

Supportive insoles can be crucial for happy and healthy feet. Whether you have flat feet or high arches, or aches and pains in your feet, consider using orthotic insoles to support your arches and reduce the risk of painful foot injuries.

Stretch and Exercise

You can enhance flexibility, balance, and aid in the rehabilitation of various foot conditions by strengthening and stretching your foot and ankle muscles. Incorporate exercises, such as toe curls, ankle circles, and calf stretches into your daily routine.

Mind Your Sitting Posture

Your foot health isn’t just about what you do when you’re on your feet; it also involves how you sit. Sitting with your legs crossed or bent at a desk for extended periods can diminish blood flow to your lower legs. It’s important to avoid crossing your legs and to get up and walk around periodically to ensure blood is flowing regularly to the feet.

Manage Moisture

Excess moisture around your feet can lead to fungal infections like athlete’s foot. Make sure to choose moisture-wicking socks to keep your feet dry and consider using an astringent, such as Footlogix Sweaty Feet formula. If you notice your shoes or socks are particularly damp by the end of the day, it’s helpful to begin changing your socks midday, and removing your insoles or orthotics from your shoes at the end of day to dry as well.

Avoid Going Barefoot

Walking barefoot in public places, such as gyms, pools, or communal showers, can expose your feet to harmful bacteria and fungi. Always wear flip-flops or shower shoes in these areas to prevent infections and to protect your feet from any sharp or rough objects.

Take Frequent Breaks

If your job involves long periods of standing or walking, be sure to take breaks to rest your feet as often as you can. Elevating your feet when at rest further helps reduce swelling and relieve stress.

Check Your Feet Regularly

Inspect your feet regularly for any changes or abnormalities. This can help you catch problems early, such as ingrown toenails, calluses, or blisters, and address them before they worsen. If you have diabetes or peripheral neuropathy, this step is crucial to maintaining your foot health!

Consult a Professional

If you experience foot pain or notice any unusual symptoms, it’s essential to consult your local foot specialist. Your Pedorthist, Chiropodist, or Footcare Nurse can treat various foot conditions and provide expert guidance for your specific needs.

Taking care of your feet is not only about comfort but also about maintaining your overall well-being. You can start incorporating these ten tips into your daily routine today to ensure your feet look and feel their best. If you’ve still got questions, or you are looking for some more tailored advice, we’re here to help! Contact your local BioPed to get started on improving your foot health today.

Sweating is normal and something we likely do every day! Significant sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, occurs when excessive moisture accumulates on the skin. If this occurs in the feet, you may experience discomfort, embarrassment or even issues such as Athlete’s foot or foul odour.

What happens when our feet excessively sweat?

Wrinkled or “pruned” looking toes

Whiteish skin

Peeling skin

Moist socks

Wet footprints left behind on floors

Dampness inside shoes

Sweaty feet are more likely to become problematic when they are trapped inside a shoe all day. This allows moisture to stay in contact with the skin for too long and may increase the risk for infections. Fungal infections commonly target the skin and nails of our feet and can be challenging to eradicate. Additionally, the presence of bacteria may create issues for the skin in between the toes and on the bottoms of the feet. Erythrasma and pitted keratolysis are bacterial infections that can be quite unpleasant. If you notice your feet are stinky, you could have developed bromhidrosis, a complication of hyperhidrosis caused by the presence of bacteria.

It is important to remember that infections can lead to serious complications if left untreated. Getting the moisture level in your socks, shoes and feet under control is an excellent first step to prevent complications!

How can you treat and prevent sweaty feet?

Change socks daily and throughout the day if needed. Choose socks comprised of breathable and moisture wicking materials. Polyester, nylon and wool are most effective at keeping the moisture level more balanced and skin on the feet healthier.

Wear shoes made of breathable materials such as leather or mesh. Rubber boots and Gore-Tex shoes are water-resistant and useful in wet weather, but this means they are inherently less breathable.

Wash your feet daily to keep the surface of the skin clean which will reduce the risk for fungal and bacterial infections. Fungus and bacteria thrive in warm, dark, and moist environments. If an odour is present, using an anti-bacterial soap to wash feet can help.

Applying rubbing alcohol or using a foot powder can help to wick away moisture on the skin. Rubbing alcohol is an astringent which dries the skin and an antiseptic which cleans the skin. Some foot powders are formulated with anti-microbials to lessen the presence of fungus and bacteria. Powder can also cool and soothe irritated skin.

At the end of a long day, allow your feet to air out!

Sweat is a normal body process as it regulates body temperature and is therefore important for human survival. It’s normal to sweat when it’s hot outside or when exercising, but if sweating is excessive or all the time, it may be due to a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis (hi-pur-hi-DROE-sis).

There are millions of sweat glands all over our body, but they are quite concentrated on the bottom of our feet. Sweat glands are activated by the nerves in our body which respond to hormones, temperature, emotions, and physical activity. Most people do not have hyperhidrosis. An estimated 3% of Canadians suffer with hyperhidrosis. Regardless, sweaty feet can be annoying and embarrassing, especially if they cause your feet to move around too much in your shoes or leave wet footprints on floors. Keep reading to learn about solutions for your sweaty feet!

What can you do at home to help your sweaty feet?

Wash feet daily with an anti-bacterial soap as part of your personal hygiene routine

Wear a fresh pair of socks every day

Socks with moisture wicking properties will draw moisture away from sweaty skin such as Merino wool and nylon

Change socks throughout the day if they become moist with sweat

Allow shoes to air out after wearing

Choose shoes made of natural and breathable materials such as leather or canvas

Apply an astringent like rubbing alcohol with a cotton ball to the skin

Try Footlogix Sweaty Feet Formula with Dermal Infusion Technology®containing oak bark and sage which acts as an astringent and is also a natural anti-microbial

An antiperspirant applied to the bottom of the feet blocks the pores in the top layer of the skin which reduces the amount of sweat allowed to surface

If your sweaty feet become malodorous, you may have a condition called bromhidrosis. This is caused by the presence of bacteria in sweat. An anti-bacterial soap combined with an anti-bacterial topical treatment will reduce odour.

Other treatments for sweaty feet include iontophoresis, which is a process that passes a weak electrical current through the skin to block sweat glands from releasing sweat. Iontophoresis machines can be purchased at certain vendors and used at home. Botox injections can also be useful to treat hyperhidrosis as they block the release of the chemical that actually turns on the body’s sweat gland production.

If your sweaty feet bothersome or are affecting your quality of life, give BioPed Footcare a call today to book a medical footcare assessment. There may be something more you can do to control your sweating!

An ingrown toenail can be painful! If left untreated, it can lead to significant pain which forces you to change the way you walk or move to protect their affected toe.

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edges or corner of the nail dig into the skin next to it causing pain, inflammation and sometimes infection. An ingrown toenail doesn’t always puncture the skin and can affect the big or small toes. When a toenail does pierce the skin at the side, there may be bleeding, oozing and subsequent infection.

Risk factors and causes of ingrown toenails:

Modifications to footwear are prudent for many reasons. In addition to removing pressure from painful areas and giving more appropriate support to those in need, traditional footwear sizes and fit may need to be adjusted for feet that are thicker, wider, or have bony prominences like bunions, bunionettes, or dorsum exostosis (a bump at the top of the foot). Footwear modifications may also be a solution for someone who needs additional support but is unable to financially afford custom-made orthotics.

Toenails come in all shapes and sizes. They can be flat or straight, or they can be curved. Curved or involuted nails, have a curvature on one or both sides of the nail plate. This curvature may be so severe that the sides of the nail come together resulting in pinching of the nail bed tissue, also known as a pincer nail.

Footwear that is unsupportive or doesn’t fit well, including shoes that are too tight, narrow or shallow may place excess pressure on the toes causing an ingrown.

Sweaty feet can be problematic because skin that is too moist becomes weakened and is easily punctured when a sharp nail digs into the side of the nail.

Toes that are bent or curly may cause more pressure to be placed on the sides of toenails. Hammer toes and bunions are commonly associated with ingrown toenails.

Cutting toenails the proper way is important for your health and comfort. When toenails are cut too short or ripped off, nails can easily dig into the surrounding skin.

A fungal infection can cause thickening of the nail and can also change the shape. This increases the risk for painful ingrown toenails.

Many of us have experienced an inadvertent toenail injury. Stubbing the toe or dropping a heavy object on a toe can both cause injury to the nail and nail bed. This can affect the way the nail continues to grow over time, affecting the shape and thickness.

Ingrown toenail prevention and treatment?

Regular routine footcare is crucial as it will ensure your toenails are being cut properly. During a routine footcare appointment, your BioPed clinician will use an antiseptic before cutting the offending nail. After cutting the nail, a small file is used to make sure the nail is smooth and is no longer digging into the skin at the sides.

Well-fitting footwear appropriate for your foot type, size and shape. BioPed lower limb clinicians will measure your feet in length and width and recommend the best shoe for you.

Toenail bracing using a composite band, trains the nail to grow straighter and less curved. It is non-invasive, and described by many as a painless treatment with zero downtime. This method of nail correction has been proven safe and effective for persons of all ages, with all nail types including children and people with diabetes. Pain, pressure and discomfort dissipates almost instantly and the correction effect is long-lasting.

Nail avulsions are minor surgical procedures performed in the clinic by a Registered Chiropodist. It is a long-term treatment option that involves removing part of or the entire nail plate and using a chemical to kill the cells from which the nail itself grows. This procedure will take some time to heal but can be an excellent option for chronically painful and infected ingrown toenails.

If you have been suffering from pain or recurrent infections due to an involuted or ingrown toenail, contact your local BioPed clinic today to book an assessment with one of our Registered Chiropodists or Footcare Nurses to start feeling relief once and for all!

Chiropody treatment for relief of common foot issues for athletes

Ingrown toenails, sweaty feet & fungal infections can keep us from achieving our best on the treadmill, in a league or at the gym. Don’t fret! BioPed’s Chiropody treatments provide relief of common foot issues, just like these!

Ingrown toenails account for 20% of family physician foot-related visits. Anyone who has had an ingrowing toenail will tell you just how debilitating it can be. Once the sides of the toenail have begun to dig into the surrounding skin, it becomes too painful to walk, run, kick a ball, jump or dance. If you delay treatment, most ingrown toenails become infected, creating a more complicated case.

While there are many causes of ingrowing toenails, such as improper nail trimming or wearing the wrong-sized shoes, sweaty feet can be a cause in athletes. Sweaty feet can also predispose someone to Athlete’s foot; a fungal infection of the skin on the feet. Athlete’s foot creates an itchy sensation in your shoes that is simply distracting when trying to focus on getting fit.

BioPed Chiropodists are pleased to announce that they have temporary and permanent solutions to eradicate your painful ingrowing toenail. Chiropodists will also treat fungal/bacterial infections that are not responding to over-the-counter medications and can make recommendations to put an end to sweaty feet. Chiropodists can also offer cortisone injections for inflamed ligaments or joints in the feet, recommend proper footwear for your game and assess your need for athletic compression socks to energize your tired legs.
