March Break is a time to unwind, explore new places, or visit friends and family. Whether you are headed on a long flight, a road trip, or a walking tour, your body will feel the effects of all the hours spent sitting and moving in unfamiliar ways. The first thing you can do to help is to pack a good pair of compression socks as part of your trip gear!

Compression socks are meant to be snug and if they are “graduated” and properly measured for, they will apply gentle pressure to your legs. The most compression will be applied at the ankle and gradually less as they move up the leg. This helps keep your blood flowing towards your heart, reduces swelling, and can make many long travel days feel easier on your legs.

Beating Lower Leg Aching Pain and Swelling on Long Journeys

Long periods of sitting on airplanes, trains, or in a car can lead to fluid accumulating in your lower legs and feet. This can result in leg aching, swelling, stiffness, and fatigue that can linger long after you reach your destination. Compression socks can help in several ways:

Key Benefits of Wearing Compression Socks

How to Choose Right and Why Fit Matters

Simply grabbing any pair of tight socks will not give you the full advantage of compression. The magic lies in the graduated compression that is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) and in the proper fit for your shape and size.

Nothing beats the change from hot summer weather to a crisp fall day. The cooler air, changing leaves, the peacefulness of nature, and the crunch of dried leaves underfoot are all calling cards for a long hike. However, for many people, long walks or hikes can come with unwelcome side effects, such as swelling of the feet and ankles, and soreness and fatigue in your legs. You should not be sidelined by discomfort. While there is no magical fix, there are strategies that can help reduce swelling and achiness on those long fall hikes. A very effective treatment and prevention strategy is compression socks!

What Causes Foot Swelling on Long Hikes?

Swelling in the feet and legs is known as edema, and can occur during long periods of walking or standing. Here are a few reasons why swelling may occur:

Gravity: When you are on your feet for hours, gravity pulls fluid downward, causing it to pool in the lower limbs.

Footwear fit: If your shoes (or socks) do not provide proper support or are too tight, they can restrict blood flow and contribute to the swelling.

Circulation changes: Physical activity increases blood flow to your muscles. If the veins and lymphatic system can’t keep up, the fluid will accumulate in the legs and feet.

Fatigue and Overuse: Long hikes can cause muscles to tire, placing extra stress on the feet and ankles. The calf muscles are the main pumps pushing the blood back towards the heart and out of the feet and legs.

How Compression Can Help

Compression socks that are sold at most clinics have graduated pressure built right into their knit weave. This allows for the socks to apply gentle pressure at the ankles and less pressure as the socks move up the leg. This differential in pressure helps to encourage circulation and prevents fluid buildup/swelling. Compression socks can have a huge impact on your legs, especially when on long hikes. Here are some benefits of wearing compression socks when hiking:

Reduces swelling: The gentle squeeze on the legs helps to promote blood to flow back up towards the heart. This will reduce fluid build-up in the feet, legs and ankles.

May delay fatigue: With proper blood circulation the leg muscles and tendons can receive fresh blood supply and help to delay fatigue.

Improves comfort: Better circulation means better oxygen delivery to the muscles, which in turn decreases the achy feeling, allowing one to enjoy the hike and take in the view.

Helps with recovery: Wearing compression leggings during a workout or a hike can reduce recovery time, since they support the body’s natural process of eliminating waste products like lactic acid.

Compression is not just for athletes or for medical conditions, it is a simple, accessible solution that can help support any active lifestyle. There are many different styles, patterns, and fabric choices to suit any activity including moisture wicking ones to help keep your feet dry when on those long hikes.

Other Tips to Help Minimize Swelling and Pain

Here are some other helpful tips to keep you doing more of what you love:

Choose the Right Footwear: Supportive hiking shoes or boots that fit well and prevent pressure points. Having the right footwear for the terrain is very important to make sure you are not slipping. They should fit snugly but not be restrictive. Arch support helps to reduce the achy foot pain.

Take Breaks and Elevate: When you stop to rest, try to elevate your feet on a rock or log, anything to give gravity a hand at moving fluid back up to the heart.

Hydrate Before and During the Hike: Drinking water helps to flush excess sodium and reduces fluid retention.

Stretch Your Calves and Ankles: Gentle stretching before, during breaks, and after your hike can keep muscles loose and blood flowing.

Fall is a beautiful time to get outside and with the right strategies, including compression, legs and feet can keep comfortable and focused on achieving goals. Whether you are tackling the newest weekend trail or just enjoying the changing leaves on a nightly stroll, your comfort matters.

Everything You Need to Know About Spider Veins and How Compression Socks Can Help

Have you ever noticed small, web-like veins appearing on your legs or ankles? These are called spider veins. While they might seem like a cosmetic concern, spider veins can signal underlying circulation issues. Let us break down what spider veins are, why they happen, and how you can address them to keep moving and doing more in life.

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are tiny, twisted blood vessels that appear just under the surface of the skin. They often appear red, purple or blue and can form patterns that resemble a spider’s web. They are commonly found on the feet, ankles and legs. Although not typically painful, spider veins can cause burning, swelling in the area, itching, and mild discomfort. They can be a sign of venous insufficiency, which occurs when the blood has difficulty flowing back to the heart. This will cause blood to pool in the veins. Several factors can contribute to the development of spider veins:

Prolonged Standing or Sitting: Occupations that require long periods on your feet or sitting for long periods can increase your risk. Occupations such as truck drivers, healthcare workers, construction workers, and teachers, to name a few.

Age: As we age, our veins lose elasticity, making them more prone to damage.

Genetics: If your family members have spider veins, you are more likely to develop them.

Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy, menopause or even hormonal birth control can play a role in the development of spider veins.

Lifestyle Factors: Obesity, lack of physical activity, and smoking can all contribute to the development of spider veins.

How Can Compression Socks Help?

Compression socks are specifically designed to improve blood flow by applying gentle pressure to the legs. They help keep blood moving upward toward the heart, reducing the likelihood of blood pooling in the veins. These are the benefits of compression socks:

Reduced Swelling and Discomfort: If spider veins cause swelling or a heavy feeling in your legs, compression socks can help alleviate these symptoms. By reducing swelling clients may experience less fatigue and discomfort throughout the day.

Improved Circulation: Compression socks promote healthy blood flow, preventing the blood from sitting in one place too long. This can help reduce the appearance of spider veins and prevent new ones from forming.

Prevention of Further Issues: Wearing compression socks regularly may help prevent more serious conditions, such as varicose veins and DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis, i.e. blood clots)

Practical Tips to Reduce Spider Veins

In addition to wearing compression socks, there are a few lifestyle changes you can make to help manage and prevent spider veins:

Stay Active: Regular exercise, especially activities that engage your leg muscles, like walking or swimming, can promote healthy circulation.

Elevate Your Legs: When resting, prop your legs up on a pillow to reduce pressure on your veins.

Maintain A Healthy Weight: Carrying excess weight can put added pressure on your veins.

Avoid Prolonged Sitting or Standing: If your job requires long periods in one position, take regular breaks to stretch or walk around.

Knee injuries are more common than you might think. Whether you are an avid runner, a weekend warrior, or experienced an awkward twist while going about your day, a knee injury can significantly impact your ability to move freely. The most common question after injury is “Should I use heat or ice to help my knee heal?” The answer depends on the type of injury and the stage of recovery. Let’s break it down so you can recover smarter and get back to doing more in life!

When to Use Cold Therapy (Ice)

Cold therapy is a go-to option for most knee injuries, especially in the early stages. Ice is the best option if your knee feels swollen, inflamed, or bruised. Cold therapy works by reducing/slowing blood flow to the injured area, which helps to minimize swelling and numbs the pain receptors.

When to use ice:

Immediately after injury: For the first 48 hours, apply ice to reduce swelling and decrease pain.

After physical activity: If your knee tends to swell after a workout or long walk, ice can help calm the inflammation.

How to apply ice:

Use an ice pack or bag of frozen veggies wrapped in a cloth.

Never apply ice directly to the skin to avoid frostbite (skin injury).

Apply it to the knee for 15-20 minutes at a time, on and off for the first 48 hours.

If you experience swelling in the knees often, consider using a cold therapy wrap that secures around the knee. These wraps are convenient for keeping ice in place while you stay mobile.

When to Use Heat Therapy

Heat therapy is most effective for chronic knee pain or stiffness, particularly once the initial swelling has subsided. Heat increases blood flow, which can help relax tight muscles and joints.

When to use heat:

After the swelling has gone down: Once your knee is no longer swollen, heat can help loosen tight muscles and improve mobility.

For chronic conditions: If you have ongoing knee stiffness/ arthritis, heat therapy can be helpful as a daily routine.

How to apply heat:

Use a heating pad, heat wrap, or warm towel.

Apply it for 15-20 minutes at a time.

Ensure the heat source is warm, not hot, to avoid burns.

A moist heat pad can be more effective than dry heat. You can create your own by dampening a towel and microwaving it for a few seconds.

Alternating Hot and Cold Therapy

For some knee injuries, alternating between hot and cold therapy can be beneficial. This is known as contrast therapy and can help improve circulation and reduce stiffness.

How to do contrast therapy:

Apply cold therapy for 15-20 minutes.

Follow with heat therapy for another 15-20 minutes.

Repeat this cycle a couple of times a day.

Contrast therapy can be especially helpful for post-workout recovery or managing chronic knee pain.

Additional Tips for Knee Recovery

Here are a few tips to help you recover faster and get back to doing more:

Rest, but don’t stop moving completely: Gentle movements, a light walk, or stretching, can help to prevent stiffness.

Elevate your knee: Keep your knee elevated, especially in the first few days after injury to help reduce the swelling.

Strengthen supporting muscles: Once you have recovered from the initial injury, strengthening exercises for your hamstrings, quads and calves can help prevent future injuries.

When to Seek Professional Help

While home remedies like hot and cold therapy are a great start, some knee injuries require a professional assessment. If you experience any of the following:

Persistent pain lasting more than a few days.

Knee instability or feeling like your knee might give out.

Swelling that does not improve.

Difficulty bearing weight on the injured leg.

You may require help from one of our BioPed clinicians. Our clinicians can recommend products like knee braces to provide added support and stability, strengthening exercises, or custom orthotics to improve your overall alignment and reduce strain on the knee.

Our veins play a vital role in carrying blood back to the heart, but vein-related issues in the legs are common and can lead to discomfort. Varicose veins, spider veins, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are among the most frequent vascular problems affecting adults. If you experience heaviness, aching, or swelling in your legs, it may be due to one of these conditions. Thankfully, compression socks provide an effective, simple solution for managing symptoms, preventing further problems, and supporting long-term vein health.

Common Vein-Related Issues

Vein problems in the lower legs can range from cosmetic to medically urgent. Here’s a breakdown of the most common issues:

Varicose Veins: These enlarged, twisted veins are visible beneath the skin, often blue or purple. Varicose veins can cause pain, throbbing, and aching, especially after prolonged standing or sitting.

Spider Veins: Spider veins are smaller, more superficial, and are usually red or blue, often forming a web-like pattern. Though less painful, they can still cause heaviness or discomfort in the legs.

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): A DVT is a blood clot that forms in a deep vein, often in the leg. This condition can cause swelling and pain and requires immediate medical attention due to its potential severity to migrate elsewhere, such as the lungs.

Graduated Compression Socks: How They Work

Compression socks, also known as compression stockings, are specifically designed to apply gradual pressure to the legs, with the highest compression at the ankle and decreasing up the leg. This pressure gradient supports blood flow back to the heart, relieving symptoms and promoting vascular health.

Benefits of compression socks include:

Reduce swelling and discomfort: Compression socks reduce fluid buildup and relieve heaviness and throbbing in the legs.

Prevent blood pooling: The pressure encourages blood to circulate upwards, reducing the risk of blood pooling, which is especially beneficial for varicose and spider veins.

Support overall vein health: Compression socks can help prevent the formation of blood clots, such as DVT, by improving blood flow and reducing clotting risk.

Who Benefits from Compression Socks?

Graduated compression socks are helpful for a range of occupations and lifestyles. Whether you sit or stand for extended periods, they provide valuable support for vein health and comfort. Here are some examples:

Pharmacists and Surgeons: These professionals often stand for long hours, putting pressure on their veins. Compression socks help prevent blood from pooling in the legs, reducing swelling and fatigue.

Teachers and Nurses: Standing and moving around all day can cause leg pain and discomfort. Compression socks help promote circulation, keeping legs feeling lighter and more energized.

Office Workers and Drivers: Long periods of sitting can slow blood flow and increase the risk of blood pooling and clotting. Compression socks encourage circulation, reducing the risk of DVT and other vein issues.

Why See a Certified Compression Fitter?

A certified compression fitter can help you find the right size and level of compression for your needs. They can:

Measure your legs to ensure a proper fit for optimal comfort and effectiveness.

Recommend the best compression level based on your lifestyle and vein health.

Provide tips on wearing and caring for your socks to maximize their benefit.

Compression socks offer a straightforward and effective solution for those dealing with vein discomfort or seeking preventive care. Whether you’re managing existing vein issues or preventing future problems, compression socks are a valuable tool. A certified fitter can make sure you get the best fit and most effective support, so consider consulting one to support your vascular health.

Knee arthritis is a common condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Often thought of as a natural part of aging, osteoarthritis is more than just “wear and tear” on your joints. It’s a complex condition involving joint inflammation, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness. While knee oseoarthritis can make everyday activities challenging, there are effective ways to manage symptoms and improve your quality of life.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is an umbrella term for conditions that affect the joints. The most common form of arthritis in the knee is osteoarthritis, where the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of your bones gradually wears away, causing pain and decreased movement. Another form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack the joint lining, leading to inflammation.

Arthritis in the knee can develop gradually or suddenly, and while age is a significant risk factor, it’s not the only one. Genetics, previous injuries, obesity, repetitive stress on the knee joint, and your overall biomechanics can also contribute to its development.

Managing Knee Arthritis: Bracing for Support

One key component in managing knee arthritis is the use of knee braces. A knee brace helps stabilize the joint, reduce pain, and improve function. The goal of bracing an arthritic knee is to reduce the load on the affected part of the knee, alleviating pain and helping you maintain an active lifestyle.

There are different types of knee braces available:

Off-the-Shelf Knee Braces: These are pre-made and available in various sizes. They provide general support and are often used for mild to moderate arthritis. Off-the-shelf braces are cost-effective but may not offer the precise fit or support needed for more severe arthritis cases.

Custom Knee Braces: These are tailored to fit your knee’s exact measurements. Custom braces offer higher support and are recommended for moderate to severe arthritis. While more expensive, they provide better comfort and effectiveness.

Choosing between off-the-shelf or custom knee braces depends on the severity of your arthritis and your daily activities. Off-the-shelf braces may suit those with mild symptoms or who need temporary support, while custom braces are better for long-term management of more severe arthritis.

Custom Foot Orthotics: Supporting the Knee from the Ground Up

In addition to knee bracing, custom foot orthotics play a crucial role in managing knee arthritis. Orthotics are specially designed shoe inserts that help correct foot alignment, which can significantly impact your knees. When your feet are properly aligned, it reduces abnormal stress on the knee joint, alleviating pain and preventing further damage.

Custom foot orthotics are tailored to your specific needs. By distributing weight more evenly and improving foot mechanics, orthotics can help reduce joint pain and improve mobility. When combined with a knee brace, orthotics create a comprehensive approach to managing knee arthritis by addressing both joint stability and foot alignment.

Compression Garments: Relieving Swelling and Improving Circulation

Compression garments, such as knee sleeves or stockings, can also help manage knee arthritis. These garments apply gentle pressure to the affected area, reducing swelling and improving blood flow. While they don’t provide the structural support of a knee brace, compression garments can complement other treatments by helping manage symptoms and providing additional comfort.

The Role of a Canadian Certified Pedorthist

When dealing with knee arthritis, it’s important to have a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your needs. A Canadian Certified Pedorthist is a specialist in lower limb mechanics and can help you develop a personalized plan that includes knee bracing, custom foot orthotics, and other treatments. They have the expertise to assess your condition, recommend the right products, and ensure proper fit and function, which is crucial for effective management of knee arthritis.

Knee arthritis can be painful and limiting, but with the right tools and support, you can manage your symptoms and maintain an active lifestyle. At BioPed, your Canadian Certified Pedorthists understand the role of braces, custom foot orthotics, and compression garments as valuable components of a comprehensive treatment plan. Visit us today to ensure your plan is tailored to your needs, helping you find relief and stay on your feet.

Athletes and fitness enthusiasts are always on the lookout for ways to enhance their performance and speed up recovery. One method that has gained popularity in recent years is the use of compression garments. But how exactly do these garments work, and can they truly help with faster recovery after sports? Let’s delve into the science behind compression and how it can benefit your post-exercise routine.

How Compression Garments Work

Compression garments are designed to apply graduated pressure to the limbs. This means the pressure is strongest at the extremities (like the ankles) and gradually decreases as it moves up the limb. This graduated compression helps to:

Improve Blood Circulation: By applying pressure to the surface veins, arteries, and muscles, compression garments help increase the velocity of blood flow. This enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles while also aiding in the removal of metabolic waste products like lactic acid.

Reduce Swelling: The pressure exerted by the garments helps to limit the amount of fluid that accumulates in the tissues. This can reduce swelling and inflammation, which are common after intense physical activity.

Support Muscle Recovery: Compression can reduce muscle oscillation, which is the small vibrations that occur in muscles during movement. Less muscle oscillation means less muscle fatigue and soreness.

Therapeutic Benefits of Compression

From a therapeutic perspective, compression garments can offer several benefits. Wearing compression garments during and post-exercise can help reduce muscle soreness and speed up recovery times. The improved blood flow and reduced swelling contribute to quicker muscle repair. Compression also can provide additional support to muscles and joints, potentially reducing the risk of injuries such as strains or sprains. For existing injuries, compression garments can help manage symptoms and support healing.

Types of Compression Garments

There are various types of compression garments designed for different parts of the body. The most common include the following:

Foot Sleeves: These are designed to provide support and compression to the feet, often used to manage plantar fasciitis and other foot-related issues.

Compression Stockings: These cover the entire lower leg, providing graduated compression from the ankle to the knee or thigh. They are commonly used to treat or prevent conditions, such as varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Calf Sleeves: These provide targeted compression to the calf muscles, which can help with conditions like shin splints and calf strains.

Compression Shorts and Tights: These offer compression for the thighs and lower body, supporting larger muscle groups and improving overall circulation.

Choosing the Right Compression Garment

When selecting a compression garment, consider the following factors:

Level of Compression: Compression garments come in different levels of tightness, measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg). Mild compression (15-20 mmHg) is suitable for general use, while higher levels (20-30 mmHg or more) are often used for medical conditions.

Fit and Comfort: The garment should fit snugly but not be too tight. It should provide even pressure without causing discomfort or restricting movement.

Specific Needs: Choose a garment that targets the specific area you need to support. For example, calf sleeves are great for runners with shin splints, while compression shorts are better for those needing thigh support.

Using Compression Garments for Sports

Compression garments can be worn during and after physical activity. Wearing compression garments during exercise can help reduce injury, muscle fatigue and improve performance by enhancing blood flow and providing muscle support. Post-exercise, compression garments can aid in recovery by reducing muscle soreness and swelling. Wearing them for a few hours after your workout can be particularly beneficial.

To ensure the best results, we recommend you consult with a certified compression fitter. At BioPed, your clinical team can help you select the right type and level of compression garment based on your specific needs and take measurements to ensure a proper fit. Compression garments can be a valuable tools in your fitness recovery arsenal, aiding in faster recovery and injury prevention. By understanding how they work and selecting the right type for your needs, you can optimize your post-exercise recovery and get back to your training regimen more quickly.

One of the primary benefits of compression socks is their ability to improve the circulation of your blood from your legs. Prolonged sitting during travel can lead to blood pooling in the legs, since the larger muscles in your legs “turn off” when you are off your feet. This pooled blood can cause discomfort and swelling in your lower legs and ankles and can lead to aching and muscle cramps as well. Compression socks apply gentle pressure to the ankles and legs, aiding in the proper circulation of blood back to the heart. This can help prevent conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and alleviate the discomfort associated with swollen feet and ankles.

Minimize Fatigue and Discomfort

Long journeys, whether by plane, car, or train, can lead to tired and achy legs. Compression socks provide support to the muscles, reducing muscle fatigue and discomfort. The graduated compression design ensures that the pressure is highest at the ankles and gradually decreases towards the knees, promoting optimal blood flow and minimizing the impact of prolonged sitting or standing.

Prevent Varicose Veins

Travel-related activities, especially long flights, can contribute to the development of varicose veins. Compression socks exert pressure on the walls of the veins, helping to prevent them from over-stretching and bulging. Wearing compression socks during your journey can be a proactive measure to maintain the health of your veins and reduce the risk of developing varicose veins. If you already have varicose veins, compression socks are your primary treatment to manage your symptoms and to minimize their progression.

Enhance Comfort During Exploration

Vacations often involve a fair amount of walking and exploring new places. Whether you’re wandering through historic streets, hiking scenic trails, or navigating crowded attractions, your legs can become swollen or fatigued.

Adaptable and Stylish

Compression socks come in a wide variety of styles, colours, and materials, making them a versatile and fashionable accessory for any traveler. From knee-high socks to compression sleeves, thigh-high, and pantyhose styles, you can find options that suit your personal style and the climate of your destination.

Living with knee pain and discomfort is a challenge many Canadians face daily. When it comes to managing knee pain, there are many treatments ranging from rest and modifying activities all the way to a full knee joint replacement. A common and effective approach to managing knee pain is bracing, and specifically custom knee braces. There are many factors to consider when it comes to choosing this kind of brace, and today we will outline some of the key reasons for using them in your treatment plan.

What Do Knee Braces Do?

A knee brace is a medical device that is designed to provide support, stability, and relief for people with musculoskeletal issues. Featuring components like compression liners, strong hinges, or a sturdy frame, knee braces aim to modify knee movement and alleviate stress on the joint. Some of the main conditions that can occur around the knee joint include:

Ligament sprains/tears

Osteoarthritis

Patellofemoral pain syndrome

Meniscus tear

General instability

Are Off-The-Shelf Knee Braces Any Good?

Off-the-shelf or over-the-counter knee braces can be very helpful for many minor to moderate stages of many knee conditions. While cost-effective, these braces are less controlling in correcting movement due to generic or pre-determined sizes. They can serve as an affordable initial option for individuals exploring knee bracing treatment.

Understanding Custom Knee Braces

Unlike off-the-shelf braces, custom braces are specifically tailored to the unique anatomy and requirements of the wearer. They are crafted from measurements, scans, and assessments of the individual’s condition, ensuring a precise and comfortable fit.

Benefits of Custom Knee Braces

Personalized Support

Custom braces are tailored to the individual’s body shape and the specific nature of their condition. Some individuals may not fall within the measurements for an off-the-shelf brace, or their unique leg shape may not match up to a prefabricated size. Custom measurements ensure optimal support and comfort, addressing the unique challenges presented by each case.

Improved Functionality

Custom braces are designed to enhance the wearer’s functionality. They are more precise and direct in the way they work due to the strength of their design and the specific way that they fit the knee. They can aid in restoring mobility, reducing pain, and preventing further damage to the affected area for complex conditions such as ligament injuries and osteoarthritis.

Long-Term Solution

Custom braces are often considered a long-term solution, providing ongoing support as individuals manage their conditions. The personalized fit contributes to increased compliance, as users are more likely to wear a brace that is comfortable and effective. They can be an invaluable tool prior to more invasive treatments such as surgery or in lieu of joint replacement.

Considerations Before Opting for a Custom Brace

Consultation with your Healthcare Professionals

Before considering a custom brace, it’s essential to consult with a doctor to diagnose your condition. At BioPed, your Certified Pedorthist can more thoroughly assess your condition, determine the appropriateness of a brace, and guide you on the best course of action.

Nature of the Condition

The type and severity of the condition play a crucial role in determining whether a custom brace is necessary. While some mild to moderate cases may benefit from off-the-shelf options, there are other conditions with unique anatomical considerations that may require a custom solution.

Lifestyle and Activity Level

Consider your lifestyle and activity level. Custom braces can be a great option for anyone looking to walk or get back to some gentle activity, but they are are also suitable for individuals with specific needs, such as athletes or those with physically demanding jobs.

Cost Considerations

Custom braces can be more expensive than off-the-shelf options. It’s important to weigh the potential benefits against the cost and explore insurance coverage options.

Knee pain should not stop you from doing the things you love. Today we’ll chat knee bracing and how to make the decision on what to choose… Custom or OTC.

With bracing there are many different types and styles of braces but most work to give support and stability to the knee and limit motion in certain directions based on the injury you have. If the knee is properly supported and stable, you will feel more confident doing all of the things that you love to do.

So, how do you choose?

The biggest difference is fit. With most over-the-counter knee braces, there is usually 2-3 measurements taken into consideration with sizing. With custom braces, typically there are many measurements and factors taken into consideration, concluding with a 3D scan or cast of the joint and surrounding leg. This level of precision is best, as custom braces will tend to hug the contours of your leg, leading to less slippage and increased effectiveness. No matter how great the brace, you won’t wear a brace that is not comfortable. When looking for a brace, look for the best combination of comfort, fit and function. This will make getting back into daily activities faster.

Severity of Injury

The more severe the injury, the more robust a brace must be. And the more important it is that it fits precisely. A mild/ low grade sprain often requires only a fabric based low profile brace, whereas with a grade 3/severe injury, you might want to consider a rigid shell brace. As the injury or discomfort gets more severe, you will want to lean towards choosing a custom brace to offload the best and get the job done effectively.

Level of Activity

For someone who leisurely walks and isn’t involved in high intensity sport often, maximal protection and support is not always necessary. Especially if the injury is not severe, an over-the-counter brace would work to give general support to the knee.

Cost

Cost will always be a factor when deciding on whether you will go with an OTC or a custom brace. Most OTC braces range anywhere from $100 to $500, and a custom brace can cost upwards of $1500. The great news is that a lot of insurance providers will have coverage for custom bracing. It’s a good idea to check your insurance when deciding on a brace.
