With compression socks becoming more popular, it is important to ensure that you are putting them on properly. Putting them on however can sometimes be very difficult, especially if you are unable to reach your feet easily or if you have restrictions when it comes to mobility. Here are a few tips that you can try to use when putting on compression socks to help make the process easier!
The first step is learning how to put the socks on properly and in a timely manner. If you have not already checked out our video on how to do so, feel free to watch it below!
One method to help assist in putting the compression socks easier is to elevate your feet for 10 minutes. Elevating your feet above your heart for 10 minutes allows for the swelling to reduce, and makes for an easier application of the socks. Simply lay down on your bed or a flat surface with your feet resting on a pillow. And then try to put the socks on with the method we use in the video!

You can also use a medical dressing stick to remove the stockings. If you are having trouble getting the stockings off your ankles or feet, especially if you can’t reach your feet very well, you can use a medical dressing stick to grip onto the compression sock and push it on or off your foot. This does require some arm strength, which can be difficult for some people. However, this is a great option if you cannot easily bend over.

The use of a sock aid device will also help with putting the socks on. If you have trouble reaching your feet or putting on your compression socks, you could benefit from using a sock aid device. This is a device or frame that resembles a foot-shape. Simply put the sock over the device and slide your foot into the device, like a sleeve. Then remove the device, and your sock will be properly placed on your foot!

Keeping your feet dry will also help with putting on compression socks! Apply powder to your feet and purchase a box of latex gloves from the drug store. When you start putting them on, first just get the hose over the toes, then over the heel to set the heel, and then work them up the calf and then the thigh as displayed in our video demonstration.

Putting compression socks on in the morning is a better choice. Legs and feet are often the least swollen or inflamed in the morning, so compression socks will be easiest to put on when you first get out of bed (especially if you elevate your feet for 10 minutes)!

Lotion will also help with compression socks. When the weather is dry, like in the winter time, skin is often more prone to friction when putting on compression socks and other garments. This is why you can use baby powder or lotion along with rubber gloves to make the process easier.

Lastly, it is important to remember to properly take care of your compression socks. When properly cared for, your compression socks can last for up to six months. However, it is helpful to have two pairs that you swap out every other day, since compression socks should be worn on a daily basis.
