We at BioPed know that it is very frustrating when you’re trying your best to do more and live a more active lifestyle and you have some sort of lower limb pain getting in the way of that. One common injury that can happen to a lot of runners or people who just engage in daily physical activity is shin splints. It’s a bother to live with – but what is it and how can you stop it from preventing you from doing more?

If, after extra movement, you feel a throbbing pain in your shins, this could be the condition known as shin splints! The medical term for Shin splints is Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome and it’s when stress occurs on the connective tissues that attach the muscles to your bones. You can even experience this condition if you’re not living an active lifestyle; things like improper fitting shoes, flat feet and weak ankles can also cause shin splints.

How can you conquer shin splints and get back to doing more? There are so many options that can get you back on your feet and pain free. Treatment options for shin splints include custom made orthotics (custom made insoles that can be customized to your feet and relieve the strain being faced on your shins), proper fitting footwear (footwear plays a large part in the pain that comes from this condition) and also using ice on your shins can also help by reducing the swelling and pain associated from it.

Shin splints can also just arise when you’re trying to do too much, too quickly. Perhaps you went for a longer run than usual or spent a bit more time at the gym then you had the last few weeks – try taking a breather for a day or 2 while icing and resting the area before you’re ready to take on that workout again!
