With winter comes slippery conditions and with slippery conditions comes the risk of falling. To avoid going for a tumble, read below for some tips on how to stay upright throughout the winter months.
Footwear!
Footwear is crucial when it comes to winter. Not only will a great winter boot keep your tootsies toasty warm, but they can be the difference between you walking through the snow and sliding through it.
With winter footwear you will want to look for the following features:
- Vibram outsole (or any other type of sole with aggressive lugs) – This will allow you to grip the slippery surfaces and prevent any tumbles.
- Boot liner – Making sure you have a lined boot that matches the temperatures you are in will make for a much more comfortable (and safe) day.
- Waterproof – One thing about winter is that if your feet get wet, they get cold much faster. Having a boot that is waterproof is crucial, especially for the slushier weather.
- Orthotic-friendly – Adding your orthotics to your winter footwear can make a huge difference. If you have balance issues, orthotics can help your footwear to function much better.
Look for brands like Keen or Lowa in select stores to find something to keep you “doing more” this winter!
Ice traxx!
Any great winter shoe can be made even better with Ice Traxx. Ice Traxx are a cleat for ice and snow that can attach to any shoe or boot. This cleat is built with a thermoplastic base that holds up even in the toughest of conditions. It has built-in metal studs that allow for gripping on icy and snow-covered surfaces. The best thing of all? No straps or buckles, just stretch around your footwear and you are ready to go!

Socks!
Thinking about the socks that you are wearing during the winter time is another important factor for winter safety. As the temperatures dip, swapping out your ankle socks for crew or higher socks will keep the lower leg much warmer. Even looking at lined socks can be a great idea, like the SimCan Heatzone sock for example. This only gets more important if you are diabetic or suffer from any cold-related conditions, such as Raynaud’s disease.
