The snow is gone, and the warm weather is here! Don’t let foot pain stop you from stepping back on the green. With these simple tips, you’ll stay upright and head down the fairway all summer long.

Start slow

Starting slow can be the difference between playing a long season and ending it early. Jumping back in and playing all day long might be exciting after a long winter, but making sure you ease back in is crucial. Take a few extra breaks and listen to your body. Often, when people start back into activity too quickly, there is a risk of developing plantar fasciitis or other foot-related issues as the lower limbs aren’t used to the pressure being put through them.

Warm-up

Warming up is beneficial every day you do physical activity, but even more so on your first day back to golf. Going from 0-100 without priming the engine first is a recipe for disaster. Consider working in a stretching routine before heading out and crushing it on the golf course.

Footwear for the green!

Making sure that the footwear you are wearing is expertly fitted is key for a successful season. Ill-fitting footwear can be the difference between rolling an ankle or steadying yourself during a slip. When looking for footwear for golfing, you’ll want to make sure you get fitted by someone who knows feet. Having extra space to accommodate for swelling, a shoe with a fairly aggressive bottom tread, and even waterproofing are all features you will want in a great shoe for golf. If you wear orthotics, looking for a removable insole inside your shoe is key to allow for extra room for it to work its magic.

Bracing!

Let’s be honest, we can’t spend all our time on the nicely groomed fairway, and sometimes we’ll end up in the sand traps! With all the hills and rough patches that every golf course has, you want to make sure your lower limbs are supported properly. This is crucial for anyone with a history of knee injuries, as all it takes is one twist to potentially re-aggravate the injury. At BioPed, we have plenty of options from simple sleeve-based braces best suited for minor aggravation to custom hinged braces for more serious conditions.
